You mean like his awful Lorraine campaign, or his antics in Sicily? Would you really claim that Montgomery had no 'success & results?'

Unlike George Patton, I suppose? Having read about his appalling campaign in the Lorraine, it seems he was content to restrict his activities to allowing his own countrymen to die in large numbers. As you like history, you might seek to read 'The Lorraine Campaign - An Overview' by Dr. C. R. Gabel. Published by U.S. Army , Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth.

I believe that, late in the war, Eisenhower asked Bradley what sort of casualty levels could be expected if Bradley's Army Group made an effort to get to Berlin, and Bradley gave an estimate of 100,000. Eisenhower already knew the agreed post war occupation zones. Do you seriously believe it would have been worth 100,000 dead Americans, simply to take territory which would later be handed over to Soviet troops?

Clearly a very brave man. Would it be impertinent to suggest that bravery is not necessarily the only qualification for assessing the capabilities of a senior commander?

@donalhartman6235 What? A general who actually chooses to take advantage of a numerical and material superiority, together with making best use of intelligence sources, before committing his forces to action? Appalling! He should be ashamed!

Would it save you the need to post further if everyone agreed that, in the eyes of many, Montgomery's greatest failing was the fact that he was born in the wrong country?

@michaelbowes9894 Montgomery was involved in the planning for Operation Rutter, which was postponed. Final planning for Operation Jubilee was the responsibility of General MacNaughton & Admiral Mountbatten. By the time of the attack, Montgomery was in North Africa. Still, don't let that stop you blaming him.

Montgomery was a Divisional commander in the BEF, and actually moved his division overnight to seal the gap in the Allied line following the surrender of Belgium. If you actually knew anything about the subject, you would have known that, I suggest.

'Had to abandon the French?' There were 13 divisions in the BEF, the French & Belgians had over 100 divisions. When Belgium capitulated and the French army collapsed, what exactly would you suggest the BEF should have done? Why do you believe that Force Z was on a suicide mission? Firstly, they were not sent to a war zone, but as a deterrent, and secondly, up to that time no capital ship had been sunk by air attack whilst at sea. Certainly Singapore was a major failure, but, given the British commitment to the war against Germany & Italy, the best trained and equipped British & Commonwealth troops were in Europeand North Africa. It is what happens when you have a comparatively small population and a huge navy. It is only possible to maintain a small army.

@WJack97224 What was this in your first post then? 'sent HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse to a suicide mission,?' The British had the option of either using their navies to evacuate a trapped army (together with 120,000 French troops) or surrendering after the French army began collapsing around them. Seriously, if you can't remember your own comments, then there really is no purpose to be served by correcting your errors.

@johnpeate4544 You are trying to reason with this Woody person. Don't waste your time, as it isn't worth the effort.

@bigwoody4704 But you don't actually discuss 'historical facts.' Merely your own prejudiced interpretation of them, seemingly based on your dislike of Montgomery simply because he happened to be born in what you perceive to be the wrong country, as your use of the pejorative term 'Limey' demonstrates.

@bigwoody4704 Please don't feel the need to justify yourself to me.
