Actually, it was a Canadian journalist, and the claim has been totally discredited by a number of investigations, including German ones.

@rosesandsongs21 You mean people who were working in industries contributing to the German war effort? Explain exactly why an individual who, for example, manufactures a shell is less of an enemy than the person who fires it? There are no civilians in industrial war, whatever people who make who make fatuous moral judgements for a comfy chair 80 years after the events they smugly condemn might imagine.

@rosesandsongs21 No. A regrettable necessity. As a now long dead naval officer from the Battle of the Atlantic expressed it to me during an interview at university many years ago. 'Sometimes you have to do things you don't like, or the people who do like doing them might win out.'

@rosesandsongs21 Thank you for telling me what Douhet's theory was. It isn't as if I didn't already know all about it, is it? It doesn't actually matter whether he was right or not. The fact is that in the 1930s people like Le May, Goering, Trenchard, and, later, Harris, believed that he was, and that air superiority was the way to win any future war. You may have the advantage of hindsight and moral outrage. They didn't. You cannot, by the way, claim that the air campaign pursued by the Allies did not shorten the war. This is simply something you wish to believe in support of your rather comfortable moral outrage. Do you even know precisely how many resources the Germans wasted from 1942 onwards relocating arms factories to underground locations or out of the way rural sites? How many aircraft were withheld from the front lines in an attempt to counter the Anglo-American bomber forces, how many heavy guns were similarly held back as anti-aircraft defences for German cities, and how many troops were needed to operate them? I assume you don't. Still, be happy in your smug judgemental outrage.

@rosesandsongs21 Again the whimpering about 'civilians.' How difficult is it for you to grasp that there were no such things? How would you describe the 'civilian' crews of allied merchantmen? You don't think that the Anglo-American bombing offensive might, just possibly, have contributed to the Soviet capture of Berlin, by seriously weakening the resources available to German commanders on the Eastern Front? Or that the great effort involved in factory re-location did not detract from overall German industrial and manufacturing capacity? The manufacturing capacity still available to Germany in 1944-5 was producing to capacity, perhaps, but how much greater might it have been if the Allied air offensive had not happened?

@rosesandsongs21 Actually, you are the one speculating. I notice, however, that you were careful not to address the merchant seaman reference. 'War is between two military forces.' No, it isn't. It is between two nations, or two opposing alliances of nations. If you can't grasp that, your lack of real understanding is not surprising. Perhaps you haven't had the privilege of speaking to veterans of WW2. If you had, your charmingly naive convictions might have been affected when they encountered reality.

@rosesandsongs21 The only point you have made is your inability to grasp what war actually involves. Read again the 1938 League of Nations Resolutions, then ask yourself which countries actually, once war began, took the slightest notice of any of them? That is what does tend to happen when romantic ideals ands brutal realities clash.
