I wonder if you have read the casualty estimates the US produced for Operation Olympic?

So, you believe that the soldier who fires a weapon is a legitimate target, but the 'civilian' who manufactures the weapon, or the ammunition for it, or even provides the food which keeps the soldier fighting, isn't? How charmingly naive. Moreover, what an easy judgement to make 80 years later, for a comfortable chair. In one sentence :- There is no such thing as a civilian in an industrial war.

I don't suppose that you have considered that the bombing hindered the production of the tanks which these Panzer Divisions required in order to exist?

@unclestuka8543 The Tunisian campaign only ended in May, 1943. 'So we never witnessed General Patton leading His tanks down the Unter den Linden !' In view of Bradley's comments about his actual antics in Sicily, and the US Army's own post-war assessment of his shambolic performance in the Lorraine, that was extremely in any case.

@unclestuka8543 Bombing Caen served little purpose, except as a means of providing the Germans with an excellent defensive position. Much like Monte Cassino.

'This video may be inappropriate for some users.' Oooh, isn't history scary? Best not to read about it.

Nonsense. The 'innocent German civilians' were active participants in the production of weapons and foodstuffs which made it possible for Germany to continue the war. How many times must it be said that there are no such things as civilians in an industrial war? It is, however, extremely easy to pass smug moral judgements 80 years after the events, isn't it?

@kurutze When did I say I agreed with it? I am simply pointing out the unfortunate reality of industrial war.

@griffon129 Please read my post again, and then point out where I said that I approved of anything. I have simply pointed out the reality of industrial war. If you choose to ignore this reality, then feel free so to do.

@griffon129 I am simply trying to explain why it happened. If you cannot grasp that, then that is your problem, not mine. The simple fact is, as Admiral Sir John Fisher said. 'Moderation in war is imbecility.' Or, as a veteran of WW2 said to me years ago when I carried out a series of interviews with ex RN & RAF personnel. 'Sometimes you have to do things that you don't like doing, or the people who do like doing them are likely to win.'
