If you want a Royal Navy warship which still exists and is truly worthy of preservation, look no further than the Egyptian Navy Ship Tariq, formerly the Black Swan class sloop HMS Whimbrel, which still survives in Alexandria harbour.

@Aelvir114 Unfortunately, things have moved on with Whimbrel. A Trust was set up to bring her back to Liverpool, an amount agreed with the Egyptian government, and the money raised. At that point, however, political upheaval in Egypt ( remember the Arab Spring?) resulted in the amount for her purchase being increased significantly. British government support was not forthcoming, and the purchase did not take place. I haven't heard of any further developments for about three years, but Whimbrel does still exist. I agree about the lack of a surviving WW1 destroyer. A whole succession of governments have been sadly unsupportive where preserving Britain's naval heritage is concerned. You only need to look at the number of preserved warships in the United States, and the fact that Canada has two important WW2 vessels, to show how unfortunate the situation is in the United Kingdom.

@Aelvir114 Whimbrel was an Atlantic escort, part of the escort for an Arctic convoy, part of Captain Walker's 2nd Support Group, and present in Tokyo Bay at the Japanese surrender, and was of a class of vessel which has been described as 'The capital ship of the Western Approaches Support Groups.' Hardly an insignificant war record. I agree about the V & W Class, but Whimbrel does, at least, still exist, and would make a wonderful centrepiece to the Western Approaches Museum at Liverpool. It won't happen though. The British government were approached a few years ago for their support, and weren't interested.

@Aelvir114 Cavalier was preserved simply because she was the last of her line. There is another RN warship crying out to be preserved, HMS Whimbrel, now an Egyptian vessel in Alexandria harbour. She ticks every box. She is a Black Swan class escort sloop, which operated in the Atlantic, in the Arctic, was part of Walker's 2nd Support Group, and was present at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. A few years ago, an attempt to purchase her almost succeeded, until the Egyptians upped the price. Needless to say the British Government was never, at any time, even vaguely interested in supporting the venture, and to the best of my knowledge still isn't.
