  1. U-boats did attack merchantmen from inside the convoy. At night, in the North Atlantic, a trimmed down U-Boat was very difficult to spot. In early 1942, the Western Approaches Tactical Unit, commanded by Gilbert Roberts, identified the tactic by re-creating a recent convoy battle, HG76. Roberts then devised the RN's 'Raspberry' tactic as a countermeasure.

  2.  @ericdickison7995  Both were written by authors who had served in the Battle. Nicholas Monsaratt (the Cruel Sea) was almost certainly Lt. Lockhart, and D.A. Rayner (The Enemy Below) began the war as an RNVR officer commanding an A/S trawler, and eventually became commander of an Atlantic Escort Group.
