  3. USAAF actually means 'United States' Army Air Force.' Unlike the British, the United States' Army, and the United States' Navy and Marine Corps, were fortunate enough to have separate operational control over their own air support.

  4. Perhaps you are unaware that the Western Allies were also at war with Japan? The bulk of the US navy was in the Pacific, and the British & Commonwealth forces had a large presence in Burma. You can add to that the major allied air effort which drained the German armies in the east of weapons and manpower, the constant supply of American & British equipment to the Soviets, and the fact that the Western Allies had had a second front in the Mediterranean since late 1942. The British had, of course, been there since June 1940, when the Soviets were Adolf's best friends. The Soviets only declared war on Japan after the bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. As you might say, 'opportunistic sons of bitches!'

  6. If you mean at Omaha, then yes. They were launched too far out, and almost all drowned by the rough seas. At the four other beaches, the landing craft commanders ignored their orders, and in many cases took their tanks right onto the beach. At Omaha, sticking rigidly to orders, in defiance of common sense, brought about a calamity.

  7. America did not 'intervene.' America was attacked by Japan and Germany, well after any German invasion of Britain could have been contemplated. In point of fact, Germany sealed her own fate when attempting Barbarossa. Moreover, the British & Commonwealth forces in the west were greater in number than American ones until the last six to nine months of the war.

  12. His actions started before Italy. In 1940 his division blocked a hole in the Allied line after Belgium surrendered. In North Africa he won the Battles of 2nd Alamein, Mareth, & Wadi Akarit. His British & Canadians fought 8 Panzer Divisions and 3 Independent Tiger Battalions to a standstill around Caen. As to Market Garden. Yes, a failure with 17000 allied casualties. How would you assess the Lorraine campaign (55,000 US casualtes - George Patton's masterpiece) or the Hurtgen Forest (33,000+ US casualties, courtesy of Bradley and Hodges) out of interest? Odd how you people, from comfortable chairs 75 years after the event, always seem eager to criticise a commander for building up a superiority in numbers, equipment, and supplies, before embarking on a battle? Presumably, you find 'Steel not Blood' tedious & boring.

Germany tended not to declare war, although the arrival of tanks, troops, aircraft, and, often, einsatzgruppen, was generally taken as a clue to German intentions.

  18. Perhaps it would be churlish to mention Patton's calamitous Lorraine campaign, or Hodges' & Bradley's finest hours, aka the Hurtgen Forect? Rommel had been defeated at Second Alamein before a small US force, as part of a larger Allied one, arrived at the other end of North Africa. Please feel free to explain the role of the US 101 Airborne in North Africa.

  24. The Germans learned how to fight a war on 3 fronts. And how to lose, as well. By the way, the Dutch were neutral in WW1.
