@MicheleLLOYD-bk2mt No. Try this. The Chagos islands were uninhabited when discovered by Portugese explorers, in the mid 16th century. The French then laid claim to the in the late 17th century, and settled a population of slave workers there to work coconut plantations from the 1770s.
The islands were taken from France with the Defeat of Bonaparte, the slaves were freed when the British Empire abolished slavery and, until around 1903, administered from the Seychelles. The descendants of the slave workers had, by then, formed an inter-island culture called Ilois, a French Creole word meaning "Islanders".
So, who do you suggest the British return the Chagos Island to? The Bourbon claimant to the throne of France, perhaps?
