@Alfred the Great Actually, he didn't. Neil Ritchie 'screwed up' Gazala. The Auk can be blamed for allowing Ritchie to remain as 8th Army commander, when the appointment was originally on a temporary basis, but he arrived too late to prevent a potential disaster, having had, as C-in-C Middle East, the situation on his northern flank distracting him. Moreover, as the documents from the time demonstrate, Ritchie disregarded the advice given to him. Even the confirmation of Ritchie's position could not be blamed on the Auk, as it was announced in Parliament without prior discussion with him.

Certainly did. He regarded the appointment of the Auk as C-in-C India, and the constant support he gave to 14th Army, as critical to his success.

I take it you mean the Patton of the movie? The George C. Scott Patton? The real Patton was criticised by Bradley for his performance in Sicily, and inflicted around 55,000 casualties, American ones, that is, during his Lorraine campaign.

Pearl Harbor was, at best, a partial success, although that might have been more Nagumo's fault than Yamamoto's.

He was interned until 1948, and died in 1954, having just completed his book promoting the myth of the clean Wehrmacht. What did the US use him for?

peter michalski I'm not surprised that a post like yours should appear.

peter michalski Why don't you read Bradley's assessment of Patton in Sicily, or the US army's own assessment of the Lorraine campaign, before talking about Patton. What might your opinion on the Hurtgen Forest be, by the way?
1
peter michalski 'At least Patton was one they feared (Nazi's).' Do you have a source for that? In point of fact, very few German commanders had even heard of him, and the shambles of his Lorraine campaign hardly suggests that they feared him.

@garymathison8361 You surely must accept Montgomery's greatest sin, in the eyes of many of these people. He was born in the wrong country.

@wisconsinfarmer4742 Moreover, the cancelled strike against Pearl's repair facilities and massive fuel stores could have had a crippling effect on US Navy Pacific operations for many months.
1
Odd that this suggestion first appeared in a novel many years after the war.
1
@jason5065 I did a while ago. It is a myth.

Those who rate Patton as a great commander should read the US Army's own post-war analysis of his shambolic campaign in the Lorraine.

When you were typing this idiocy, I hope you didn't drool over the lap top, as saliva might cause electrical problems.
