It is simply the Post Office Inquiry defence, used by a whole host of people. 'I cannot recall' is not a denial, but simply an avoiding mechanism. Giving a Manager the opportunity to resign when, potentially, caught out in wrongdoing is not uncommon. It resolves the problem without the necessity of a potentially damaging investigation.

To be fair, Mr. Lammy probably thinks that an impact assessment is something which is done only after his driver backs his ministerial limousine into another one in the Westminster car park.
7
Not really. To the Lords, perhaps.
2
But only for personal consumption. All fully declared and above board of course.
2
The current salary for an MP is £91,346 p.a. Plus, of course, healthy expenses and access to lucrative 'contacts,'
2
Perhaps a Peerage. A seat in the Lords is, after all, a nice little earner.

I misheard it. I thought that hje was being locked in a cupboard.

It dates back to Plato, who in 'The Republic' argued that those who seek public office should not be allowed to hold it. Plato argued that the best rulers are those who are reluctant to rule and are driven by a sense of duty rather than ambition.

Yes, but to be fair, the thought of actually having to return to the real world inhabited by the peasantry must be very traumatic.

It was an interesting claim. Withdrawing the Winter Fuel Allowance in winter 2024/5 was justified because pensions would rise from April, 2025. Perhaps the concept of inflation had totally escaped Rachel from Accounts? I recall our newly-elected MP on local radio explaining how fair Reeves' decision was, and receiving such a savaging from the interviewer and his constituents that he promptly vanished, and hasn't been heard from since. Doubtless, he will re-emerge a few months before the next General Election, and tell us all what a great and caring MP he has been, of course.

My son told me that neither he nor any of his mates were particularly inclined to put their lives on the line for a government which openly despised them. I recommended that he contact his doctor and tell him that he felt depressed and suicidal, which should provide him with an immediate 'Get Out Of Jail Free' card.

More likely, she will end up in the Lords.

The foolishness of people with right of centre opinions is quite breathtaking. How to fight back against the Dear Leader and his coterie of malevolent half-wits? Let's form lots of little parties, splitting the available voters into small groups. That's a good idea! Reminds me of the multitude of irrelevant resistance cells in 'Life of Brian.'
1
Probably the deal which was clearly done to 'get' Johnson, and what Starmer was willing to offer her in return? Perhaps, however, she can be kept quiet with a Peerage and the chair of a few meaningless committees?
1
Tell the full story! She turned up in her state-of-the-art de luxe camper van, which took up two spaces in the car park. That was why she was booed.
1
I doubt that they care. £93,000 per year for four more years, almost unchecked expenses, and lots of lucrative 'contacts.' In their minds, honesty and integrity are very distant seconds.
1
But then was highly critical of any lesser mortals who did exactly the same?
1
You think that Charles cares in the slightest about the peasantry? What a charming idea.
1
There is no point complaining about her. Most of her working life was spent in a Complaints Department. She is used to it.
1
I believe the correct term is a 'scorched earth policy.'
1
@paulclairethomas1344 They will, therefore, concentrate upon filling their boots in the short term.
1
Give over! £91,000 a year (and rising soon), largely unchecked expenses, and lots of lucrative 'contacts' to make. Would you risk that? When you become an 'honourable member' you probably have your integrity gland surgically removed.
1
The Dear Leader is a Yuman Rites Lawyer. Perhaps he might take up the Chagossian case against the British Government?
1
I suspect most Labour MPs have simply concluded that they have four and a half more years in which to make themselves as wealthy as possible. Isn't that what MPs generally do, anyway?
1
I wonder if, more likely, she will be both pleased and relieved at recent events, as she will not now need to explain to complainants why her catastrophic budget was so catastrophic. Not that dealing with complaints is likely to trouble her much, of course, as apparently she spent many years working in the Complaints Department of a prominent bank.

His increasing girth certainly suggests that he isn't missing many meals.
