The North African theatre was over, and Patton was removed from command after Sicily.

True. But the Americans didn't have a big enough army to invade anywhere in the west without the Canadians and the British at their side. Even more relevantly, the Americans historically depended on the Royal Navy to get them to Normandy.

@craigclemens986 Why? Don't you know the size of the British & Canadian forces employed on 6 June, 1944, compared to the much smaller US ones?
1
@craigclemens986 So, you believe that the British & Canadians asked the Americans to take a back seat? It rather suggests that you don't know the actual numbers involved at D-Day. Would you like me to give you fuller details?
1
@craigclemens986 OK then. Tell me you numbers for 6 June, 1944, in terms of ships, aircraft, and men.

@craigclemens986 I hope your other figures are more accurate. Certainly, of the troops who carried out the initial landings, 83305 were American and 23000 British. We'll not go into the fact that one of the three Task Forces were escorted by the US Navy, and the other two by the Royal Navy, or the fact that, by the end of the campaign, there were five American & twelve British & Comonwealth divisions ( plus four independent Brigades) involved. I assume you do know why the initial landings were dominated by US troops? Don't be so touchy. Most people are well aware that the campaign waged by the Western Allies was a joint effort.
