There is the recent case of Jack Leslie, the first 'black' footballer to be selected, as a non-travelling reserve, for an England squad, although not for the team itself. The (unproven) claim is that he was omitted 'because he was black.' Had that been the case, why would he have been included in the squad in the first place?
Leslie played between 1921 & 1935, for Plymouth Argyle, in the third division south and later the second division. He was, by all accounts, a fine footballer, playing 401 matches and scoring 137 goals.
He has now been awarded a posthumous England cap, simply because of his skin colour.
I wonder how many footballers from the period, just as good or even perhaps more successful than Mr. Leslie, have been denied a similar posthumous honour simply because of their skin colour, which was, unfortunately, white?
