History Debunked

Perhaps you are not aware of the role of Achilles at the Battle of the River Plate?

@strongandco The point I am making is that 'Achilles' is a far more respected and traditional name for a Royal Navy warship than is 'Agincourt.' Actually, I doubt 'most people' even know what an 'Achilles heel' is, these days, either. A knowledge of Greek myths is hardly a prominent feature of the modern school curriculum.

If the British did not wish to remind France of such matters, then calling a previous class of nuclear boats the 'Trafalgar' class was hardly diplomatic. Moreover, 'Achilles' is a traditional name for a Royal Navy warship. There have been ten previous ones, named either 'Achilles' or 'Achille.' There were even two at Trafalgar, one on each side, however! The WW2 Achilles played a significant part, particularly at the Plate, as a shop of the New Zealand division of the Royal Navy, and later the Royal New Zealand Navy. 'Agincourt' has been used on five occasions only. In this case, I approve of the change of name.

@nihilistlivesmatter No. Actually a naval historian. However, was anything I wrote actually incorrect? You could check it out for yourself? On google, perhaps?!

@nihilistlivesmatter 'The point is Agincourt was decided against to appease the French.' Was it? I would like to see a credible source confirming that claim. Oh, by the way, the loathsome Grant Shapps, the very epitome of a serial failure rising to high office, would not be considered such a source.

@nihilistlivesmatter I asked 'I would like to see a credible source confirming that claim.' You don't seem to have one? Shapps? A failure in every office of state in which he has served. Particularly in Transport, when he failed to do anything about the disgraces that were, and are 'smart' motorways. In effect, the Tory predecessor to the numbskull that is David Lammy. Just look up his record in office for yourself. One of the leading reasons for the Tory catastrophe.

@nihilistlivesmatter Or this is simply the now irrelevant Shapps pining for lost 'glory' and trying to get his name, however briefly, back into the news? Changing the name of a ship furing building is hardly something new. To give a few 20th century examples :- HMS Revenge was originally to have been named Renown. HMS Duke of York - Anson. HMS Anson - Jellicoe. HMS Howe - Beatty. HMS Cardiff - Caprice. HMS Coventry - Corsair. HMS Carlisle - Cawnpore. HMS Vindictive - Cavendish. There are many more.

@nihilistlivesmatter I do not need one. I did not state it as a proven fact, but simply postulated it as a possibility. Hence the question mark.

Yet the US Navy has a destroyer call the USS Winston S. Churchill.
