@yagsipcc287 Yet the Republic did not allow allied escort vessels to use ports on the west coast of Ireland, which would have closed, or at least reduced the size of, the Air Gap much earlier in WW2 than was historically the case. Nor were similar facilities accorded to allied aircraft. Certainly, a number of Irishmen joined the allied cause, but as private individuals, without the approval of de Valera's government. Indeed, many were actively persecuted by that government after 1945.

Indeed. Some would have us believe that slavery practised by anyone other than the English/British was an early form of welfare, undertaken entirely for the benefit of the people enslaved.

Perhaps you are unaware of this, but the Island of Ireland had existed for quite some time prior to 1922.

@daviddavidson2357 Switzerland & Sweden were in a totally different position, in that large German armies were on their borders. That situation certainly did not apply to the Republic. I did not suggest that the Republic should have declared war, but the example of Portugal could easily have been followed. Portugal was officially neutral, but gave the Allies access to bases in the Azores. de Valera could have done exactly the same. The treatment of some Irish citizens who fought for the allied cause was, surely, disgraceful?

@deanodog3667 'the irish fought in both world wars in their droves , you're full of it !!' Yes, the did. In the First World War Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. In the Second, individual Irishmen did, but the Government of Ireland did not.

Portugal also traded with Britain, on very favorable terms. U Boats certainly used Portuguese territorial waters, but, inless you believe the kind of nonsense produced by 'Hunting Hitler' style programmes, not Portuguese ports. Lisbon was indeed a hive of spies, but from both sides. 'Whereas Ireland supplied Britain with food supplies, civilian workers, volunteer soldiers military intelligence.' Food supplies, indeed. Had the Republic not done this, the entire economy would have collapsed. Irishmen joined the allied cause on a individual basis, but this with without the approval of the government of the Republic. You don't actually have much of an argument.

Irish Christianity was far different from Roman Christianity. Indeed, the Papacy was quite active in stamping it out. Dark Age & Medieval History doesn't seem to be a strength of yours?
