  2. The English Channel should not have come as a surprise to anyone. It had been there for some time, after all. Had Britain been part of mainland Europe, the whole of her history, especially her naval history, would have been different.

It also took place right at the end of 1941, so hardly at the start of the war, Moreover, whilst it demonstrated the effectiveness of Japanese torpedo bombers, it did not demonstrate the effectiveness of air power as a whole. The Royal Navy had operated for over two years without suffering significant losses from air attack. The Germans, of course, didn't even have a torpedo bomber at all until mid 1942. How effective, by the way, was German air power at Dunkirk?
