When did he 'reach out' to Britain. The appeal to reason (surrender or we bomb you) doesn't really come into that category.

How was it a disaster?

Rommel was worried about the dominance of Allied air power, having encountered it in North Africa & Tunisia. However, the problem with trying to concentrate his defence close to the beaches means exposing the armour to Naval Gunfire Support. Really, either idea would end in failure.

Let them approach the beaches, and see what happens when they come within range of the Naval Gunfire Support.

@killme2675 You can add to that number the nine or ten million Soviet citizens disposed of by genial Uncle Joe.

Eight Panzer Divisions, & three Independent Tiger Battalions, became bogged down against the British & Canadians in the Caen area.

As the Soviets didn't have a navy, they wouldn't have been able to get there.

@JackoBanon1 That was 13 days after D-Day, not at the time of the landing.

I suppose you really believe that Irving is right, and every other historian wrong? Oh well, no accounting for foolishness.
1
@Niko132 Nonsense. Irving's book about Dresden used just two tainted & prejudiced sources, and was later totally debunked by a detailed German study. Irving certainly did use the archives, but in a very selective manner. There are certainly a number of fools around, however. Most of them are unquestioning fans of Irving.
