  2.  @terpfen  Perhaps you need to do a little more reading about what Bradley's opinion of Patton really was? Bradley saw Patton as arrogant, headstrong, and not respectful to his seniors if their commands didn’t match his desires. As he said before Third Army was activated for Operation Cobra, if he’d been Patton’s senior in Sicily, he’d have relieved him.

  3. In the movie, yes, but in fact, nonsense. Montgomery had fought and been wounded in WW1, and been a commander in WW2 since 1940. Whatever his strengths or flaws, he was far too mature and responsible a character to indulge in such 'races.'

There was a Syrian Brown Bear called Wojtek which was acquired by the Poles in Iran, and remained with them until the end of the war, allegedly helping to carry boxes of 25 pounder shells to their field guns at Cassino. After the war, he arrived with the Polish 22nd Artillery Supply Company in Scotland (having by then attained the rank of corporal) and was handed over to Edinburgh Zoo after 'demob.' He subsequently lived a long, uneventful, life, until 1963, when he died at the age of 21, weighing 35 stones, and reaching over six feet tall. There are numerous memorials to him, including one in the Imperial War Museum.

  6.  @terpfen  'You are thinking of the scene in the Patton movie.' I most certainly am not. I saw that comic nonsense of a movie long ago, and immediately trained myself to forget all the errors and inaccuracies it contained.

  10. Well, how would General Marshall's alternative, of attempting an invasion of France in 1943, have ended? If American troops were to see action in the west in 1943, let alone 1942, where would you have suggested they be deployed?
