@michael boultinghouse The British & French had pursued policies of appeasement with Hitler for several years, in the vain hope that a general European war could be averted. At what point would you suggest that they should have ended these policies? The agreement with Poland should have made Anglo-French intentions obvious, yet Hitler still ignored the warnings.

@michael boultinghouse No, it proves that the British were bright enough to understand that, with a regular army of ten divisions, they could not possibly contemplate a land war against Germany & the Soviet Union. Even the land war against Germany was supposed to be a predominantly French one, with Britain gradually building up her strength in Northern France, whilst controlling the seas and imposing a naval blockade. Look up 'realpolitik.'

@mattkierkegaard9403 Indeed, largely because Germany never bothered to declare war on anyone (except, of course, on the USA). The Germans simply marched straight in.
