Why don't you people actually read the terms of the Franco-British pact with Poland, before commenting upon it? 'The Brits guaranteed Poland's right to exist.' No, they did not. No guarantees concerning Poland were made by either Britain or France (you forgot France, of course) only that they would declare war if Germany invaded Poland. It was an attempt to put an end to the German military aggression of the recent past, and thus avert a wider European war. This statement was well-known to Germany in advance of their invasion. 'In attacking Poland he gave the Brits the excuse they needed to attack Germany.' Nonsense. Exactly how would a country with less than 15 Divisions, and with no land border with Germany, possibly attack a military power with over 100 Divisions? Send the Home Fleet down the Rhine, perhaps!?

In what sense? Moreover, haven't you forgotten France?

The Franco-British agreement with Poland provided for a declaration of war in the event of a German invasion, but made no such undertaking where the Soviet Union was concerned. I refer you to the Secret Protocols agreed between Lord Halifax & Edward Raczynski, and in particular :- 1. (a) By the expression "a European Power" employed in the Agreement is to be understood Germany. (b) In the event of action within the meaning of Article 1 or 2 of the Agreement by a European Power other than Germany, the Contracting Parties will consult together on the measures to be taken in common.

@JimLaifstail The French & British made no guarantees at all about Polish territory. The simply stated that they would declare war in the event of a German invasion of Poland. It was an attempt to deter further German military aggression, and avoid a wider European war.
1
@JimLaifstail Why? The French & British stated that they would declare war if Germany invaded Poland. Wasn't that what they did?
1
@JimLaifstail Because the Treaty had a wider ambition. The hope was that the threat of war from France & Britain would deter Germany from further military aggression, prevent a wider European war and thus ensure that Poland was not attacked.

@buoazej No. Not correct.

The war was turned into a World one only when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, and Germany declared war on the United States.

Try harder. The Anglo-French agreement (yes, you forgot the French) with Poland stated that they would declare war if Germany invaded Poland. It was an attempt to put an end to the German military aggression of the recent past, and thus avert a wider European war. The Soviet Union had no similar record, however much western governments might have distrusted the regime.

@AFGuidesHD The only guarantee that Franch & Britain gave to Poland was that, should Hermany invade, they would declare war. The intention was to avert a major European war by putting an end to German military aggression. There was no guarantee to 'defend' Poland.

Drivel.

1). Britain & France did not guarantee to defend Poland. 2). Britain (and the US, by the way) did not abandon Poland. Both were faced with a fait accompli (the Soviet occupation of Poland) and were unwilling to start another war because of it.
