You obviously haven't read about Patton's shambolic campaign in the Lorraine. Well worth a read, if you want to know about the real Patton, rather than the George C. Scott one.

@randylucas2458 It is fascinating how people resort to abuse to cover up their lack of knowledge. Have you really not read the examination of Patton's Lorraine campaign carried out by the United States' Army? You should. It is called :- 'The Lorraine Campaign, An Overview, September - December 1944'' written by Dr. Christopher R. Gabel, and published by the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth. Unless I am much mistaken, the report is written by an American about an American. When you have read it, you might need to watch the ludicrous 'Patton - Lust For Glory' movie again. Alternatively, you might wish to read up about Bradley's views on Patton. Oh, and the British 'did not have to fight them on the beaches you did not have to fight them in the streets you did not have to fight them in the fields' because they had the largest navy on earth, although I accept that the Americans did make a considerable contribution after they were finally forced to become involved when Germany declared war.

@randylucas2458 Thank you for showing the extent of your ignorance about Montgomery. 'Broke & alone.' Firstly, he died neither broke nor alone, and secondly how would that be relevant to his military ability had it been true in any case? 'America is regarded as the winner of world war II along w Russia.' Only by poorly educated Americans such as, evidently, yourself.

Rommel wasn't ill when he was defeated at Alam Halfa. Or at Mareth, or at Wadi Akarit.

@randylucas2458 In point of fact, America did not' force itself into the war' but was attacked first by the Japanese and then by the Germans. Haven't you heard of Pearl Harbor, the German declaration of war, and Operation Drumbeat? I take it you haven't read the examination of Patton's campaign in the Lorraine by a U.S. military specialist? I don't blame you. Why take any notice of facts when you can keep your cherished mythology? Especially if it means you don't need to read about the butcher's bill Patton imposed on the US army. If you don't take any notice of a mere 'Brit' why do you keep posting your aggressive and immature comments? Why not just watch a few of Hollywood's more asinine productions on your T.V?

@randylucas2458 Oddly enough, I am certain I know far more than you about the role of the US between 1939 & December, 1941. You seem to be diverting somewhat from your earlier nonsense about George C. Scott/Patton. Haven't you bothered to read the US army study I recommended yet?

@thevillaaston7811 Patton was what? Patton was in the middle of his casualty heavy (from the American viewpoint) Lorraine campaign, at the time.

Only if you believe the movie. The American officer lampooned by Redford, Julian Cooke, actually complained to the makers of 'A Bridge too Far,' about the way he was portrayed by Redford. This scene was fictional.

@thevillaaston7811 People who post such things as 'Field Marshall Montgomery is overated' are best ignored. Like the 'Churchill was a warmonger' crowd, they aren't able to support their posts with arguments, and rarely even respond. It seems to be something they feel the need to do, possibly because someone once said something similar to them. Still, playing on here does, hopefully, keep them off the streets.

John Cornell Ah. A shameful confession (or perhaps not) is that I have never seen 'Saving Private Ryan.'

John Cornell Looks like I didn't miss much. I think it pre-dated U571, which I did see, for my sins. After about half an hour, my wife commented that 'I didn't think you knew words like that!'
