@sirjamessommer True, but a German aircraft did crash into her.

@nickdanger3802 Many sources. After being handed over, Ohio steamed down to Dunglass on the Clyde and loaded 11,500 tons of kerosene and diesel fuel oils. She was the only ship carrying these supplies which were so vital to Malta's survival. Before she sailed she was given special strengthening to protect her against the shock of bombs exploding near her. In the previous convoy, the tanker Kentucky had been sunk with only a few hours' repair work needed on a steam pipe, which had been broken by the force of such explosions. The Ministry was determined that this should not happen again, and so Ohio's engines were mounted on rubber bearings, to reduce shock, and all steam pipes were supported with steel springs and baulks of timber.

Perhaps you don't realise how important the immediate results of the convoy were?

@_Braised Historical accuracy would go right out of the window should Hollywood get hold of it, I fear.

Which battles might those have been, out of interest?
2
The battlefleet did withdraw, partly because the convoy was entering the Narrows, and the escorts had enough to do without worrying about the heavies, especially at night, but also because it was to act as a screen against the possibility of the Italian Battlefleet sortieing.

@nickdanger3802 Define 'extensively.' Ohio had major work undertaken on her engineering equipment. Aren't you arguing over details?

The purpose of Pedestal was to re-supply Malta, and it succeeded. Look at what Malta-based submarines and aircraft did to axis supply lines to North Africa immediately afterwards.

If Pedestal demonstrates anything, it is how determined the Royal Navy was to fight the convoy through to Malta. And, of course, how the Royal Navy succeeded. Is the teaching of history in your part of the world really so lacking?

Whatever. She was crewed by British Merchant Seamen.

They were of little or no use in the Narrows, and would have required a number of small escorts to protect them from the risk of U-boat or S-boat attack. The Capital Ships were actually positioned to shield Pedestal from potential intervention by Italian heavy ships. Which, of course, never happened.
