  4. Not a lot. Axis warships tended to stay in port. Large carriers would have been wasted in the Atlantic. The carrier war was in the Pacific.

  5. Your evidence for this being? The idea of Italian Admirals wandering around a naval base tampering with AA gun settings is entertaining, if rather improbable. Did the local lodge provide them with the necessary spanners, or were they obliged to buy them themselves?

  11.  @domdegood5376  So. You are saying that Italian Admirals ordered their AA crews to miss the attacking Fleet Air Arm aircraft? Wouldn't it simply have been easier to paint their battleships white and turn Taranto's searchlights onto them, to make things easier? In short, I don't believe you!

  12. Tirpitz made a brief sortie against PQ12, but retreated rapidly after being attacked by Albacores from HMS Victorious. Apart from a brief excursion to shell a large shed on Spitzbergen, Tirpitz remained as strictly an in-harbour, Fleet in Being, thereafter.

  16.  @trumpetmano  It isn't so easy to force a decisive outcome when your enemy is as fast as you are and chooses to disengage. Jutland proved to the Germans that the blockade imposed by the RN could not be broken, and that the slow starvation suffered by the German people would continue until both civilian & military morale collapsed. The High Seas Fleet never risked an open clash with the Grand Fleet again, and eventually mutinied.

  17. Not at night they wouldn't. Somerville planned a night attack on Nagumo's Indian Ocean raid task force, using radar equipped Albacores, but neither side managed to locate the other.

  18.  @MrEjidorie  The British had two new armoured flight deck carriers in the Indian Ocean at the time of Nagumo's raid. They would have been outmatched in daylight, but unopposed at night when they could have used radar-equipped Albacores. The British never intended to send Swordfish or Albacores with what became the British Pacific Fleet, by the way.
