To be honest, I had expected the Dear Leader to turn up in a Siren Suit, waving a large cigar.

Quite. My son is of military age, but when we discussed the situation he said he did not feel inclined to risk his life for the sake of the Lads in the Hotels, and that neither did any of his mates. I have never served in the Armed Forces, but both my father and grandfathers did. They believed that they were fighting for their families and for Britain. I do not think that they would have been willing to fight for Britanistan. Neither would I, and neither will my son.

Isn't it odd that very few other European nations have committed to the idea? Or that the United States has already said that it will not put 'boots on the ground?' Do you not understand that, after years of governments of both political persuasions systematically running down Britain's armed forces, Britain is in no state to provide such a force, still less maintain it? The probability is that Putin, having expected to steamroller Ukraine in weeks, will be relieved to get out of the mess with something that he can present as a victory to the Russian people. If, however, he still maintains further expansionist ambitions, are you seriously suggesting that he will be deterred by a tiny British 'Peacekeeping' force? All wars eventually end at the negotiating table, however much you might cherish a continuance of the current conflict.

Unpopular leaders often seek to involve their countries in foreign adventures as a means of distracting people from their mistakes.

THe UK is not laughable. Succeeding governments, however, have been contemptible.

The Dear Leader's grandstanding is characterastic of a widely disliked authoritarian leader seeking to distract his people from widespread dissatisfaction and a failing economy at home by indulging in a foreign adventure intended to distract people. I wonder if Leopoldo Galtieri is his role model?
