The Zulus themselves had recently taken the territory by force of arms. Zulu expansion was a major factor of the Mfecane ("Crushing") that depopulated large areas of southern Africa. It is during this period that Shaka deployed an army regiment for raiding tribes on the North. Historical events are usually not quite so black & white as some would have us believe. Pardon the pun.

It seems that, in reality, most of the soldiers there actually came from the West Midlands, which might have rather affected the quality of the singing. 'Men of Walsall' wouldn't have had quite the same stirring quality to it.

Bromhead didn't say that his father was at the Battle of Waterloo, just at Waterloo. Perhaps he was catching a train in the 1840s?
