  2. What did the British actually do to India? Hospitals, roads, railways, education, a professional civil service, an enlightened administration, and a functioning democracy. Would a sub-continent of perpetually warring autocratic Princely States really have been preferable?

  3.  @honved1  But as I said. They were not in Normandy. My father had been in North Africa since 1942, and landed at Salerno in September, 1943. I don't recall the slightest reference to that last September. It seems that he and his comrades of several allied nations were, and still remain, mere 'D-Day dodgers, out in Italy.'
