  1.  @craigpeter4794  The scrapping took place after the merger of White Star and Cunard, both of whom were in financial difficulties. Another Grand Old Lady, Cunard's Mauretania, was scrapped at the same time. Put simply, at the time there were too many liners competing for too little traffic.
