Aside, that is, from using control of the sea to evacuate 210,000 British & 110 French troops, before landing the 'Reconstituted BEF' in Cherbourg, only to be told by General Weygand that the French Army was no longer capable of 'organised resistance' of course?

The captain was aware of ice warnings, and had altered to a more southerly course. No captain, then or now, was expected to remain on his bridge for 24 hours and more. That was why there were Watchkeeping officers.

@frankknudsen842 Perhaps you haven't bothered to read the opinions of those Master Mariners and liner captains who testified at the British Inquiry, and unanimously supported Smith's actions? By the way, Titanic was not in the middle of a field, but was unfortunate to encounter an isolated iceberg.

Probably much like Olympic. A troopship in WW1,but scrapped before WW2. Whether she might have, like Olympic, sunk a U-Boat is more uncertain.

Almost certainly, she would barely be remembered. In terms of development, Olympic was far more relevant. Without the events of 14/15 April, 1912, Titanic would have been the Princess Margaret to Olympic's Queen Elizabeth.

She wouldn't be. Her sister Olympic, and OLympic's rival Mauretania, were both sold for scrap when White Star & Cunard merged in 1935.

@fmyoung Lots of mights there. Murdoch had not issued any wrong orders, and the court could only judge Smith and Andrews based on the law as it currently existed.

@fmyoung 'I said they could've passed for the wrong orders in the eyes of the court.' Despite the fact that none of the expert witnesses (Master Mariners and Liner Captains) had raised any doubts? How can anyone be an 'accomplice' of the law? You either obey it, or you are in breach of it.

@fmyoung You don't seem to know how lifeboats were viewed at the time. They were not regarded as places of safety in themselves, but as a means of transporting people from damaged vessels to rescue vessels nearby.

Is that what you think? If you don't bother to find out facts, no wonder you make mistakes. The minimum number of lifeboats was dictated by the Board of Trade, not by shipping companies ot shipbuilders. In fact, Titanic's crew only just managed to launch the twenty boats they had.

It is not what I think, it is what you have confirmed with your comments:- 'I think this whole ferrying spiel might've been an argument put forward by shipowners at the time just so they could get more room for 1st-class amenities on their ships.' Certain aspects of shipbuilding, such as the minimum height of bulkheads and the minimum number of lifeboats, were strictly regulated by the Board of Trade. Any ship which did not meet them would not receive Board of Trade certification, and therefore could not put to sea.

@botconboy460 Quite correct, Titanic's sister ship, Olympic, was a successful liner for over 20 years, and her nickname was 'Old Reliable'.

@29brendus Odd that so many people reported the iceberg, but none any explosion, then? Even odder that the first allegation about the Federal Reserve connection only appeared, with no supporting evidence, in the 1990s, I suggest.

Perhaps Lightoller, who had been a seaman since 1887, might possibly have known more about things than Senator Smith, who was an expert on Railroad Law? Smith achieved some notoriety for being more colourful than knowledgeable, even being called "Watertight Smith" by the British press for asking whether watertight compartments, actually meant to keep the ship afloat, were meant to shelter passengers. In addition to this, Smith also asked the ship's fifth officer Harold Lowe what an iceberg was made of, to which Lowe responded, "Ice, I suppose, sir?".
