I imagine the payback was at least 1,000 times what it cost to make this film. I"m willing to bet it was much more than 1,000 times. I odn't know business, but.. my instinct tells me they got paid handsomely to re-dress Ma Bell.

There's a sale at Penney's!

2022: TMI... make it go away..

@steve94044 House I once rented, built in 1911, had surface wiring and "Bell System" phone jacks. Every time I see any of that it just reminds me breaking up Bell was monumentally bad decision-making.
2
Feels like a pitch reel, and aimed at multiple levels of leadership within Bell

Gen-x probably were the last to be taught penmansip -- I was taught in 2nd grade (1977) the Palmer Method. The Greatest were taught Spencerian, which was even prettier.
2
Excel Communications is that you? I knew them from IT work in 954/305-land and they were all ex-bell. Always did top-shelf work for us, the best.

Can't slam an iphone like you can slam a Model 300 or 500. It'd kill it. There was a catharsis in that.. "Oh YEAH? *SWING*BLAM*" Into the cradle it went. And the phone would be just fine. Try that with an iphone..
2
Government forced that to happen in 1984 when they broke Bell up.

Pretty sure one of the elephants (the one that got mad) was Stan Freeberg. Maybe both were. Reminded me of Pete Puma. The rest were blanc.. and the ladies maybe June Foray?

"Are all these your guitars?"

Mom taught me this. "Whatchamacallit's residence, what'shisface speaking". Then when I went to USAF I was taught pretty much the same, only adding "How may I help you?" at the end. And to this day, that's how I do it. Business / military have no room for "Whaddy'a want, mac?" The only change, thanks to caller id and cellphones is.. if I know the other party I just greet 'em by name. And if I don't know the other end, I just say "This is What'shisface.." and then the other party speaks.

@MrJruta "I'll put you through Pizza Hut.. one moment, please"

Still working the cord board between Heaven and Hell.

@tomservo5007 How many more would have jobs? How many more things would be made in the USA even now? It could've been handled differently. Breakup was a monumentally bad idea with catastrophic results to the USA.

@red_ford23 Morton Gould FTW ;o) (j/k, i like hollyridge strings too.)
1
@lancetheman28 My neighborhood in PR was made 1964.. too close together. My house now in Florida, 1973.. closer than that. I do not like it, and will not do it again. The sticks for me, if I ever move again.

Love the Merlin. Used it in the usaf, then later in private industry. All my ringtones in my iphone are Merlin rings. They put tons of research just.. just into the ringtone alone!

I worked at a place that had a cage in the Miami ATT building in 79th street. The buildin next over had the original 305 exchange as a showpiece. ANyway back to the other building -- as I tended to my servers and storage it didn't escape me that a couple of decades before, the entire floor I was on was filled with this. Nothing but this. It was an almost overbearing sensation that this used to be nervecenter of Miami's phones.

@KeizerPaPa Bruh, you gotta quit sniffing MEK fumes...

My astromech ate them.

@BiblicallyAccurateToaster The problem was he didn't have the physical card. No card, no deal. Having it memorized or written down on paper doesn't count.. even in 2017 when I was working night shift at a convenience store.
1
I know you're trying to work a d*ck pic into your little joke, but remember this is just 20 years after the United States and the world were in a war, and meat was super-rare during those times. Meatless Tuesdays were a thing. Ask the brits, too.
1
I wish I could've worked for the real Bell, but alas, it was demolished when I was 13.
1
Ever get a "Fast Busy?" Meant exactly the same. Now, when that happens, you get "Call Failed" from your iphone / android's display. Still means the same thing. "All Circuits Busy"

Nerds were always cool. It took normies forever to figure it out.. then copy it. So now nerds look not like that.

Shes the Shift Supervisor.

And these guys were standing (or working with) on von Braun's shoulders.. and Oberth's.. and Goddard's.
1
Internet (WWW + "social" services) have turned into an amplifier of hate and intolerance and division. Bell (the man) would be turning over in his grave and so would the guys that invnted the first amplifiers. What a monumental backfire social media is.
1
I'll give you my own answer -- my own number in PR ended in 5557. Cinco Cinco Cinco Siete. Only because were were broke-*ss poor, it got cut tons. My friends called me "Cinco Cinco Sin Corriente" (five-five-without-current). 🤣 I can laugh now, but back then, it was an embarrassment to me. Then I got my first job. Didn't get cut again 'til I moved out to start my own life.

Toot from your Boot?

BTDT. From a pay phone in Plaza Las Americas, when I was 17. (wasn't 8 hrs, more like 3). Putting out the cig butts in the space between the booths. The phone bank right in front Rahola Foto. Wonder what store is in that space now, and what occupies the space that phone bank used to take..
1
They didn't "discover" it. They were broken up in 1984, and forced to get rid of Western. Our own government did it. The evil ATT of today is not the ATT of back then.
1
And you think the ATT that supposedly wronged you is the same one from this film? In 1984 the US Government killed Ma Bell, and in so doing, started the decline of America. Losing Pan Am in '91 was another such moment. We lost something irreplaceable. But sure. Moan about your lost AppleID.

about 7 years away
1
Are you connected (heh) to a family by the name of Strowger?
1
Find out why that happened. It happened in 1984. Find out *why*. Then ask yourself "was that the right course of action?" History would argue it was a monumentally bone-headed idea.
1
All you get for nothin' is a rubber biscuit.
1
Fast forward to today, and some phones do! (Samsung Galaxy fires..)
1
What Edward Larrabee Barnes and Charles Forberg did for Pan Am was similar. Went from old and fussy to clean and instantly still recognizable as Pan Am.

I live in a 1973 house. No optical masers. My best bud lives in a 2001 house. Fiber-to-the-premis (optical maser) .. by AT&T, no less. As always it's all about the $ (and a bit of blind dumb luck) as to which neighborhoods get fiber and who has to get their 'net from crumbcast.
1
For real? Looks more like UPA (Mr. Magoo, Gerald McBoingBoing, etc) I do detect a bit of Maurice NObel in the backgrounds, so that would suggest Chuck Jones and WB. And those angular "man" silhouettes -- I guess Craig McCracken was influenced by this. That could Professor Utonium!
1
I"m also vintage 1969. We had strowger (mechanical) switches in my town. My aunt and gramma spent tons of time in Hospital Metropolitano, where they had a wood-cased switchboard.. every room, every phone, was a jack and a light. I was mesmerized by it. But in 1984 while I was in 7th grade.. AT&T was no more.
1
It's the Continental globe. United lost the merger. Just like American lost the US Scare / American merger. The only "pure" legacy left is Delta.. and even that's debatable. But of the Legacies, they're still the least-suck one. (Delta bought Northwest, but in this case I think Delta won their culture war. I still don't forgive them for slitting Pan Am's throat. )
1
You really want to talk to Susan from Card Services? Or did you know your car warranty is about to expire? I'm glad we can send to voicemail, or outright block some numbers. But I do miss the dial, and the tikki-tikki-tikki of these switches doing their thing.
