She's a great woman to have bought the octogenarian lobster, but I can't believe she gave it back to the fisherman to drop back in the sea where it could be caught again. Kinda Russian roulette. It's so huge and impressive, surely a public aquarium would have given it a home where it could live out its days free from the risk of lobster pots? Anyone who bought that amazing creature for food is crazy - not only would it be hell to kill and prepare, its meat at 100 years old would be like shoe leather!

@jonathanhenryreport You say that... but of course you'll never be tested on it! A lobster however (if it could speak or was capable of a sophisticated hypothetical discussion like what we're having), would surely choose meals on tap and no predators, over the freedom to starve or be boiled/dismembered alive for fine diners. Which, hypothetically speaking, makes crustaceans considerably smarter than you.

@ravenscry1091 100% correct, and you see this same phenomenon all over the YouTube comments for animal rescue videos. Some people see a human being with the moral courage to stand up against cruelty and injustice and defend the weak, (as that fantastic woman did), and they feel inadequate about themselves and their own pointless little lives. For such people, the kind and courageous deeds of others are an unwelcome mirror held up to themselves - and they don't like what they see one bit! So guess what - they criticise those great people. They should try to be inspired by the superior behaviour of others to do better themselves. The world would be a better place if they did. My advice to them? 'Don't hate - Appreciate!'

Yep, anyone who bought an octogenarian lobster to eat is crazy - it would be tough as old boots. It's just a shame the lady who bought it couldn't have donated it to a public aquarium, where it won't ever get caught again.

And the irony is that going vegetarian isn't even a choice if human beings want to survive as a species - continuing to raise and eat meat is killing the planet, and if it continues will ultimately wipe us all out. Unfortunately the Western world is so obsessed with steak and burgers, it will fight change to the bitter end. And it might literally be the end, because there isn't another planet we can hop on a rocket to, to re-settle there and pollute it like we've polluted Earth. That crawfish story is horrific. Children are very empathetic and sensitive to the suffering of other sentient creatures. Its a tragedy so most people lose this wonderful quality, as they become adults. More empathy would make the world a far better place! Stay safe and well and have a wonderful Christmas. X

@tramarthomas6105 What a negative post, he may not be caught again - it's a big ocean! You missed the point, which is that she didn't want him to be killed just to make a few meals. He's a magnificent specimen who survived around 100 years, he should be respected by humans, not predated on by them. Jeeze don't we have enough choices of food to eat, without gleefully boiling a big old boy like him alive? That woman is an example of the best of humanity. She had the imagination and moral courage not to run with the crowd, but to take a stand, publicly point out an injustice she saw, and put her money where her mouth is by buying back his life. Respect to her. I doubt any school or soup kitchen diner would thank you anyway - an octogenarian crustacean would not be good eating!

@mpreiss7780 Agreed, respect to the woman for not walking by, as most people did, but taking action when she saw an injustice - an elderly lobster from the deep, held captive under bright lights awaiting its killer owner. Killing a magnificent creature who survived for 100 years just to make a few instantly forgotten meals, is sad. That lady is the best of humanity, someone who not only cares but puts her money where her mouth is to right a wrong. I wish fishermen threw back those enormous lobsters when they catch them - they don't even taste good! I think they are mostly exploiting them for display purposes, because they will get lots of attention at the fish market, which encourages people to stop and buy a smaller lobster. I couldn't bear to keep a living creature like that in my fridge, especially not one as big as him - he might eat all my food lol! Seriously though, I could no more boil a lobster or crab alive than any other living, sentient being. Horrible! It's not even an instant/fast death, as chefs claim. The latest scientific studies suggest the unfortunate boy or girl takes 2-3 minutes to die, that's a helluva long time to suffer agony inside a scalding hot cauldron.

@unscripted1012 You think we should only care about people or sentient beings who care about us do you? How ridiculous! On that basis, you wouldn't care about wars that didn't affect you personally, or if there was another Holocaust in which groups other than your own were persecuted and killed. Your attitude is 'Those people don't even know me, so I don't have to defend them against their killers'. Your selfish stupidity is off the scale!

@unscripted1012 So you don't have anything better to do on Boxing Day than argue about a lobster with a stranger. Thankfully I do! Make it your New Year's resolution to get a life in 2022. Who knows, you might even manage to make a friend, if you can develop some kind of vaguely engaging personality. Though I wouldn't bet my house on it!
