Yep, poor old lady and her poor dog - there's a special place in hell for that cowardly shitbag!

@violatorut2003 Your comment was incorrect. You cannot be guilty of the specific crime of 'Cruelty' to property, which in its conventional sense is classified as money, or other inanimate, unfeeling objects like vehicles, buildings etc. That's obvious! The legal offence of 'Cruelty' only applies to animals or other sentient, feeling beings. Your argument that 'animal cruelty is property damage' is not accurate, because animal abusers can be prosecuted for cruelty to wild or stray animals, which are not the property of anyone! Animals are not always property, but it is always against the law (in civilised countries), to cause suffering to them. Glad to clear that up for you!

@Myco-T You make a very valid point. Many of the world's most disturbed and dangerous killers started out by harming and killing animals. Animals are vulnerable, and have no voice so can't report the attack or get help. And of course, their cowardly killer won't get any serious consequences like jail, so it's a way for these sickos to practice their violence before they direct it at other humans. Cruelty to animals is a very serious crime, that should get far more serious punishment. But in 2020, you are more likely to get a prison sentence for a crime against property (eg burglary) than against a living, breathing, sentient creature. That's so wrong! What a sick world when our justice system places more value on inanimate, unfeeling property than on animals.

Poor Beverley and Pepe, I lived alone with my dog for many years and the thought of finding a violent criminal in my home who would attack us both is terrifying. What a brutally sad ending to both their lives, they must have been so frightened. That cruel scumbag is obviously a psychopath, he will always be a danger to those physically weaker than himself. Thank God forensics improved over the years and he didn't get away with this cowardly crime - or he might be walking the streets now, as dangerous as ever. I know hindsight is wonderful etc, but it's unfortunate Beverley's home security wasn't tightened up after that maniac first broke in and stole from her house. It's well known that burglars often return and do a second burglary - especially if they found cash the first time. Police should have advised her to get grilles on the windows and doors and should have increased patrols in the neighbourhood, as the older residents were obviously being targeted. Old folk are a soft target for these shitbags.
