  1. British food was LOUSY in the ;seventies and 'eighties, which is shocking when you consider we were next door neighbours with gastro-supremos the French! In fact pretty much all European food is better than British - French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, even Eastern European cuisine 'understands' food better than the stodgy Brits do. I say that as a Brit raised on British food in the 70s and 80s!

  2. Absolutely right, British food was lousy, safe, stodgy garbage in the 'seventies without the taste-bud tantalising heart and soul of neighbouring cuisines like French corden blue, and Spanish tapas dishes.

  4. Damn, British food was lousy in the 'seventies. As Mary Berry's TV shows from that era powerfully prove! A 'squeezed' clove of garlic? Chop it up and chuck it in! Sadly, stick-up-their-ass Brits didn't embrace the magical taste and health benefits of this wonderful member of the Allium family for another 20 years! And didn't Mary sound horribly BBC elocution/Celia Johnson in 'Brief Encounter', plummy? Television was clearly still VERY elitist in 1973!
