  1. Appalling, how can the squatter claim any legal right to live there when he has no valid lease? The law must be changed to protect home owners. A woman was just murdered when she came home to find two squatters (a man and a woman), in her New York apartment. The situation is way out of hand.

  2. Exactly - the fact he was a high ranking cop gave him power, and likely prevented his wife from reporting him to police when he made previous attacks on her/the children. It's unlikely the murder was his first violence in the home - far more likely it was an escalation of his long-term domestic abuse. That poor woman needed help to escape that monster.
