  1. Exactly - the fact he was a high ranking cop gave him power, and likely prevented his wife from reporting him to police when he made previous attacks on her/the children. It's unlikely the murder was his first violence in the home - far more likely it was an escalation of his long-term domestic abuse. That poor woman needed help to escape that monster.
