Accuracy is everything... ...unless it's a .44 hollow point. Then, minute-of-torso is good enough.

To be fair, those "Big Irons" can also run .44 Special, which is ballistically similar to .45 ACP. Still superior to the 9mm in power but a whole lot more manageable than those +P+ magnums.

@NoBrakes23 All calibers "can be disappointing." There is sub-par ammo of every type, brand notwithstanding. However, traditionally, . 44 Special, .45 Colt, and .45 ACP are ballistically similar in standard loadings. One was designed as a competitor to another and one was designed as a modern version of another. That being said, there are also "light for caliber" .44 Magnum options out there that feel like peppy .44 Special loads. These guns can function well with those, too. My primary point is that you don't have to shoot wrist-breakers just because you've got a big bore. My point stands.

@shockwave6213 It is. Also, .45 Colt is ballistically similar to .45 ACP

@FtmfwId A lot of people have done a lot of videos on the subject, along with countless others writing articles about it. Standard vs standard and max vs max, .45ACP beats 9mm.

@michaelbaker8284 I'm certainly not saying otherwise. I handload several calibers/gauges and prefer my loads over most factory ammo. However, when comparing calibers and/or firearms, factory ammo offers a more consistent baseline. It also offers more relevant data for the majority - since most folks don't roll their own.

@Z1gguratVert1go The up side is that they're easier to reload than typical rifle cartridges.

Your average predator is, pound-for-pound, way tougher than your average person. When I'm out in the woods, I carry with the idea that I probably won't get a follow-up shot. Honestly, it's a .44 Magnum and/or a 12 gauge shotgun, depending on where I'm going. If it ever comes down to me or a bear/cougar/whatever, I don't want to know how long I can survive the fight. I want it over before it truly begins.

@Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce Nope, I meant what I said. It's a play on words.

@LIONTAMER3D Not even close, bud.

@TresTrefusis Exactly. You want something that will take large pieces of its head off.
