That's essentially what the US was supposed to be in the first place. A basic framework of common laws for the sake of the people and all other power going to the individual States. We let the Federal Government have too much power and now, the individual States are far too stifled in their ability to govern themselves. What's worse is the insane number of people who want to take even MORE power away from their local and State governments to give to the Federal.

Mike Williams And the North 1/4 as well! We don't even want to be part of California as a State. Let alone as a Country!

Squid280 You don't see the difference between using the Constitution to secure rights for more people (the reason we have a Constitution in the first place) and ignoring it to give the Federal government power it shouldn't have? The entire reason we have an amendable Constitution is because the framers knew they weren't perfect and so designed a system where the people could ultimately decide if we wanted to add more FREEDOMS to it by way of additional government restrictions. It was never meant to be wielded against the people or - just as bad - ignored completely for their own power grabs. Slavery NEEDED to be abolished. The Civil War did not NEED to happen. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in a war that could have been avoided. Instead of spending years fighting a war, they could have spent those same years discussing policies that would allow the Southern States to abolish slavery without going bankrupt. But no. Instead, two hot-headed sides stopped talking and started shooting. States' rights could have been preserved AND slavery could have been abolished. Unfortunately, the wrong people shared your over-simplistic view, so it ended with blood. Rest assured, I'll never vote for "Squid280."

Matt Hartman Nothing you said countered anything I said. Edit: However, your analogy is pretty weak. The members of the LGBTQ community are citizens of the US. Slaves were not and in fact, Abraham Lincoln and his ilk did not see them as being equal. He stated that he had no interest in securing equality for the slaves because they were not equal to whites, in his eyes. He was merely interested in freeing them and entertained the idea of sending them back to Africa. Hundreds of thousands of people died because the President was sick of being nagged and wasn't willing to push for a diplomatic solution.

Melissa0774 Please point out where I said we should do away with the Federal government.

Beam Me Up We are the many, they are the few. They cannot seize anything without the complacency of the people. If one man robs a group of ten men, they LET him do it. If he was armed and they chose not to be, they LET him do it. There isn't an excuse for what Americans have allowed the government to get away with. There's only the ability to see that it was wrong and stand against it now.

Robert Nrobretual Your one vote means more when it comes to changing your State laws than when changing Federal laws. Furthermore, if you're in a State in which you feel the laws are genuinely too much to bear, you can move to another State that better reflects your views...and you can do so without a passport. That's one of the major benefits of the Union. Fifty different States to choose from and the freedom to do so as much as you like. Every new Federal law is going to conflict with some of the States because they are different from one another.
