I hate it when people call any rifle with a scope a "sniper rifle." That means every hunter I've ever met is a sniper, right? Lol

Paul Nicholson Yes, they have managed to eek out enough performance from some very expensive air guns to allow those who are neutered by their government to pretend to have equal "firepower" on the Internet. That's about all it's for. I can pick up a decent enough rifle to take out any animal in North America and have decent follow-up speed for about $250-$300, new. Name me the $300 air rifle that's putting down elk and grizzly bears from safe (over 100 yards) distances, consistently. Air guns are novelties. A mediocre solution to a problem that was already solved by gun powder.

@t-bfr45-70 Our LGS had a Sharps in 45-70 in great shape for $750, once (What the deuce?!). No layaway available. Missed it by two days. I learned a hard lesson about always putting money away for "the next gun." I'll be a Sharps-hooter yet! As for the snipes, I've been shooting them for years. I still don't know why the kids have such a hard time finding them.

@t-bfr45-70 Thanks! I've yet to bump up to 45-70. My "biggun" is my grandfather's handed-down Marlin 444s. It's a blast pulling that old lever gun out at the range. Everyone figures it's a 30-30 or 357 Magnum...until I squeeze the bang switch. Man, the looks I get when that thing goes off are hilarious! Unfortunately, I can't find anyone making "California friendly" hunting ammo for it, so it has been relegated to the range. I think I'm gonna go ahead and try my hand at loading, though. It seems like a waste not to take it out and put it to its proper use. Anyway, thanks for the conversation. Enjoy that Sharps of yours and let me know if you're ever planning to part with it!

+manzilla48 Anyone with access to a hardware store and a Walmart has access to the tools to kill many people. Explosives aren't rocket science and neither are slam-fire guns. A combination of the two can easily dispatch lots of people. Shall we outlaw fertilizer, cleaning supplies, plumbing pipes, etc. too?

+manzilla48 I didn't say guns aren't easier, I said mass killing isn't hard without them. The reason we have more mass killings is because we have more twisted bastards with an inclination to kill lots of people. Not exactly the kind of folks I'm looking to disarm myself around. Now, if you really want to get into all of the talking points on why we have so many mass killings, we can but honestly, it mostly boils down to this: Our society is screwed up. If it were the guns themselves, how then did my grandfather (and many others of his generation) go to school every day with a shotgun and/or rifle hanging in his back window, leave his truck unlocked (giving anyone who walked by access to it) and never once end up in the middle of a school shooting? The fact is that guns used to be everywhere in the US - more so than today. You could buy one over the counter in most stores. Any teenager could go in, buy as many guns as they could afford, buy the ammo to match and walk down the street with their purchases...yet school shootings were unheard of. Tell me how, exactly does that mesh with this new age "guns are bad and solely responsible for the uptick in shootings" philosophy that has become trendy? I've got news for you: Guns aren't bad. Violent criminals are bad. Family members and teachers who ignore obvious signs of mental instability in children are bad. Parents who allow untrained children access to weapons are bad. I'm really glad the band-aid approach worked for the UK however, we're not ready to give up and allow our government to treat us all like potential criminals. As for Paris, I had no idea that fully automatic AK47s were legal there. They're not even legal here for most people and we're the "gun nuts." Or were you saying that they aren't legal and the terrorists still managed to easily get their hands on them (which kind of goes against your position that gun bans work to deter mass killings)?

Actually, hammers kill more people than rifles, not guns overall. However, cars kill far more people than guns and there are quite a few more guns here than cars on the road. Not to mention the fact that cars have many more safety features and require licensing to use them. Considering that cars weren't even designed to kill, it seems they're far more lethal than guns. I think the "safety oriented" people in the US should start trying to ban cars. It would save far more lives than banning guns.

Wow. These people are so neutered that they're afraid to even say that they'd like to some day have "permission" to defend themselves in their own homes. I can't even imagine what it would be like to see the government as parental figures who get to decide such things for me. I'll have to ask some American Democrats what that's like. Thank God we kicked the crap out of Britain and won our freedom...at the end of a gun.

Paul Nicholson And you obviously can't read. Either that or you're stupid enough to try to kill an elk or grizzly with a Daisy air rifle. But yes, as someone who owns a Ruger .22 air rifle, I can say with certainty that an air rifle (that happens to be a bit more powerful than some rimfire .22s) is, in fact, a novelty. It's a toy I used to teach my children on, before handing them a real rifle (and after giving them time with a .177 BB gun). Those that actually manage to move decent caliber bullets at a useful velocity are prohibitively expensive compared to the firearms they're trying to match. Air guns are not a reasonable alternative to real firearms. That's all there is to it.

Is there anything the inbreds in the UK can't do? I don't understand it, personally. I mean, in the US we look down on that sort of thing and call those types "hillbillies" and "perverts." In the UK they hold them up as exalted. I just don't get it.

Nice slight of hand with the statistics: "In the UK, in 2014, there were 24 gun homicide deaths for the whole year. In the US on Christmas day, there were 27 deaths." Why are you comparing the number of people who were murdered with guns in the UK in one year...to the number of people who happened to die of anything on Christmas in the US? What a completely asinine comparison. Hell, even if we're talking gun deaths, you're intentionally including suicides, while omitting suicides in the UK. Government propaganda.
