History is filled with stories of the strong taking from the weak. I can't think of a single society that exists today, that didn't "win" at the expense of human life. Sometimes they conquered others and sometimes they fended off conquerors. The strong survive. Assigning modern interpretations of morality to it long after the fact, is disingenuous at best. Yes, the entire story should be told. No, that shouldn't change the fact that we celebrate the man who helped lead the way for the United States to exist, today. Any American who feels otherwise should put their money where their mouth is: Lead by example and vacate this continent. Give your home to an indigenous person and swim back to Europe.

lina Arroyo What do you mean? Those societies exist today. Every Country in existence right now either invaded others or fought off invaders. You're a proud Italian, so you should know that your own Country's history is filled with such things. As far as I know, Italy is still there. It hasn't "self destructed." The strong survived. My point stands. Yes, we should behave better than people did then. I never said otherwise. What I said was that we should not apply our modern version of morality to people who lived hundreds of years ago. It's really that simple. Edit: As far as other cultures needing praise, I agree completely. The minute they form a holiday that is ACTUALLY about that and NOT about taking a holiday away from someone else, I'll back them completely. This, however, is not what that is. Happy Columbus Day

maria ruy They want to replace Columbus Day because Columbus doesn't live up to modern standards of morality. Of course, almost nobody did but that's okay because they can use that to do away with other prominent figures from history, too.
