  2. Actually, the "enemy" is ISIS, Al Queda and any other terrorist organization, the majority of whom happen to be radicals who support Islam (hence, "radical Islam").

  3. +MaxadBarre Maybe the moderate Muslim community can start showing their disapproval of such groups by helping to come up with some adequately insulting names that don't involve their own religion. It would be better if all of their leaders would stand up and publicly denounce them but, you know...baby steps.

  4. +MaxadBarre I think it's time you get over it. When groups do bad things in the name of Jesus, they're called Christian extremists. When groups do bad things in the name of Muhammed, guess what, we're going to call them Islamic extremists. By the way, Muslims make up roughly 25% of the world's population. 20% of the Muslim population would only be 5% of the world's population. So no, I would hardly call it the end of the world if 5% of the population got really mad considering how much of the world is already there.

  6. +MaxadBarre I do not disagree with any of these points. As Christianity is the majority religion of the West, there is an almost unavoidable bias against Islam. Surely you can agree that a similar bias exists in the East pertaining to Christianity. I am not saying that this is fair or just, merely that perspective will always play a roll in the reporting of events. Everyone is the "good guy" from their own point of view and those who have conflicting ideologies take the subconscious (and sometimes conscious) position as the "bad guy." Obviously there are other factors at play such as basic morality, social norms, etc but it almost always comes down to like-minded vs the opposition. I would like to ask you again though, what is it that separates ISIS from Islam. I don't profess to have a vast knowledge of Islam but I am trying to learn in order to be fair. You have said several times in this thread that ISIS is not an Islamic terrorist organization but said they were Jihad. What is the actual difference? Isn't Jihad an army of Muslims fighting for Islam? (forgive my ignorance if I'm off base. There's a lot of misinformation mixed in with facts on these subjects)

  7. +MaxadBarre Thank you for clarifying. Having sifted through a sea of commentary on the issue, I was getting a very different impression. A great many people claim that ISIS is following Mohammed's instructions in the Qur'an. Admittedly, I have not yet read the Qur'an, so I don't have an opinion in this area as of now. As for discouraging other Muslims from thinking it's righteous to join ISIS, I couldn't agree more. Obviously we don't need more terrorists in the world. I do feel, however, that the labels are somewhat semantic in this regard. One who believes in peaceful coexistence is not easily swayed to violence. One who believes in violence is not kept peaceful for long. In an ideal world, the general public would always treat the sins of individuals as individual sins but that's not the planet upon which we reside. While pleading with non-Muslims over labels may help some, it won't be enough to make a significant difference. Instead I would concentrate on reminding Muslims that this period in history is merely a test of their faith and resolve. That many people have faced unjustified bias and misdirected hate since the dawn of time and the truly righteous are those who do not succumb to anger and indignation in the face of misunderstanding. Furthermore, doing so publicly (such as this discussion) will do more to help sway the view of those who misunderstand Muslims than shouting at them about terminology. A man standing in a park reminding people to be peaceful brings far more peace than a man shouting at people to change. Remember, the only way to direct the narrative is to lead by example.   8. +MaxadBarre Well, thank you. Though I admit, I am just as susceptible to knee jerk reactions as anyone else. Anger and fear always drive us to lash out first and ask questions later. And don't worry, the Qur'an will be joining the Bible, Torah and Tao Te Ching on my list of spiritual texts. To add to Helen Keller's thoughts on obedience, I believe that opinion without understanding is also blindness. I would invite you to study many texts as well. There is a plethora of knowledge that can only be gained through first hand study.

  11. +jensen1901 You should expand your view. I would suggest adding BBC, Al Jazeera and RT to your roster, for starters. And remember, "respected" doesn't necessarily mean "unbiased." I've seen plenty of one sided articles and reports from every major news source. The point isn't WHERE you get your news, it's whether you put it through the reality filter. I have just about every major news organization in my feed, specifically so I can filter the fluff out of the actual news. Comparing several angles of the same story quickly reveals the actual facts. I don't much care how the people delivering the news "feel" about the topic, regardless of whether they got a job at the Times, the Journal, etc. Limiting your news sources won't give you unbiased news so much as give you the bias you're looking for.
