I know, right? Talking about having to slather butter and sugar on her kids' food to get them to eat it? Ha! More like she slathers that crap on veggies so SHE can eat them and her kids picked up her bad habits! I'd be willing to put money on it that her kids are miniature versions of her. Poor things never stood a chance.

@HerbalAssailant Calling BS on that one. I live in a small city with very little tax base (so no extra to spend on frivolities). The lunches at my kids' schools are good enough that they sometimes take a couple of dollars with them to get a side to go along with the lunches I make them. If a school isn't providing options that taste good within the parameters, that is the failing of that school. I really don't think it's that, though. Much more likely is that so many kids eat so much crap nowadays that anything not dripping with sweet or salty flavor comes across as bland. Anywhere else in the world, a vegetable tastes like a vegetable. Here, it tastes like "Not enough sugar! WAAAAAAHHHHHH!"

@HerbalAssailant No, you're clearly the one who doesn't understand. You are trying to put the blame of your bad experience on these regulations, where that's clearly not the problem. If there was a problem with the food in your school, it was up to the parents and students to let the school know that it needed to change. Repealing a nationwide healthy foods program because some schools didn't bother to put effort into making the food taste good is utterly ridiculous. It is completely feasible for schools to make healthy foods that also taste good (even those with little to no extra money to spend). Furthermore, if the lunches were that bad, why weren't you making your own and bringing it in? I know that the concept is lost on some parents but my kids have been able to make sandwiches since they were six years old. I expect anyone at a high school level to be able to figure out how to feed themselves. But I digress. If your school didn't bother trying to make healthy food taste good then there's no reason to believe they're going to try to make food that tastes good even a little bit healthy. I guess it's better to promote terrible dietary practices, if the alternative is people actually having to get off their lazy butts and tell their local school district that they want good food to taste better, right? I mean, we wouldn't want anyone having to be an active participant in their own lives or the things that affect it. That might lead to people taking responsibility for themselves and making better choices. We don't want any of that in this glorious age of instant gratification and passing the buck. Nope, better to just roll back the healthy lunches and pass around the sugary, high cholesterol slop. Sure, it's killing you but at least it tastes good!

@HerbalAssailant Now, now, no need to use your age as a shield at this point in the game. You chose to engage in public discourse, so you don't get to play the victim for having been responded to on the subject you chose to talk about. Especially considering you intentionally spoke about your school in the past tense, to make people assume you were older than you are. Sorry you didn't realize that having an opinion on the Internet means that others will respond with their thoughts on said opinion. Now you know.

Given what I've seen of the results of your upbringing thus far, it doesn't surprise me that you would be the type to stick your fingers in your ears and hum when someone says something you don't like. You have certainly proven yourself to be a shining example of the typical teenager. Congratulations, I guess.

My kids won't notice the difference. I make their lunches every day and even when they decide to get milk from school to go with their lunch, they prefer plain milk to chocolate milk. Maybe people like this very robust woman need to stop using butter and sugar to get their kids to eat. My sons eat their meals because they are being raised in a house where they are required to do so. I don't quite believe that children have been starving themselves at school since this went into affect. I see the menu that gets sent home every month and it all looks like tasty options. The kids who would turn it down are likely the kind of little roundies who could stand to skip a meal anyway (and yes, I do blame their parents for that). There was nothing wrong with mandating that public schools make their lunches healthier. The problem lies with the parents who let their kids eat mountains of crap and never make them eat a green vegetable (or slather them with butter and sugar, defeating the whole purpose of eating vegetables in the first place).
