Putting a brand new drivetrain in an old VW bus would keep it from breaking down too... and it wouldn't cost $100,000. My Dad's old Beetle never broke down. Of course, it was running a Porsche engine but who wants a really fast Beetle that will go 350+ miles on a tank, when you can spend a lot more to get a slow one that won't pass a power station? :-/

+Jimmy Kraktov I'm not disputing that at all - I love a numbers matching resto as much as anyone and the old bugs are incredibly reliable when done right. My point is if you're going to heavily modify a VW (and I won't judge anyone for choosing mod over resto - different strokes for different folks), there are MUCH cooler and cheaper ways of doing it. The problem I'm seeing is that more and more hipsters are turning money hungry. They want to be "alternative" but they want to do it in a very mainstream, capitalist way. Now, I don't have a problem with capitalism but I do have a problem with people who claim to be shouting down Babylon while practicing the same price gouging, consumer screwing techniques as those they hate.

Mentioning the fact that a restored bus is already overpriced doesn't exactly make this a good value.
