In case anyone missed it: THE ENTIRE "backward" SOUTH is ranked higher than California, THE RICHEST STATE IN THE NATION.

@anibalhyrulesantihero7021 California has a $200,000,000,000 (that's two hundred billion dollars) surplus that their governor loves to brag about. Meanwhile, kids in Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, etc, are getting a better education on average. No excuses.

@lilshaz8378 It's not "huh" at all. California doesn't care about the middle, working, or lower class people in the State, so public schools suck. Their private schools are great because they don't have to make due with the scraps the State provides. The colleges are top notch because the State funnels all kinds of money into them, to attract the next generation of rich/well off people into the State. California has the 5th-6th (depending on the year) highest GDP in the world...with a population about the same as Canada. The _only reason for any of this State's failings are incompetence or apathy in government. With a $200,000,000,000 surplus, they could afford to do a lot better in several areas. They don't. They're happy maintaining the status quo.

@eklectiktoni I'm sure you're right about the crime but unless you've seen the meat marlets they call schools in California, you have no idea how bad it is. They'll quite literally push kids all the way through with long grades, and then either give them an undeserved diploma or "age them out" (which is when a student becomes 18 and is no longer their problem). It's disgusting.

California's education priorities fit perfectly. Their public schools suck because they don't care about the regular people who live there. Their private schools are funded by the rich, so they're good. The State funnels plenty of money into the colleges because they want to attract meat from other areas and appease the local rich.
