I was gonna say, it was terrible landlords that expanded renter's rights to the point of being detrimental. However, landlords didn't cause "squatters' rights" to be a thing. This is residual from the days of taking a horse and buggy across the plains and staking claims to land. It then morphed, due to periods when people were abandoning property and the states saw a benefit to allowing others to take over that land. That way, there would be someone responsible for the tax bill. You're not wrong. Greedy politicians are behind this.

@jasonschannel9017 States DO claim your property if you don't pay your taxes. Then they sell it at a tax auction. That's not what's happening here. States are allowing two parties to BOTH pay the taxes and not informing the true owner. Then, they're awarding the property to the party who is trespassing on it, rather than the party who actualy owns it.

@aslfdjalskjflkajs134 If I own it and I'm paying my property taxes, you don't have a right to take it. Just like if I put some family heirlooms in a storage unit and pay my monthly bill, you don't have a right to cut my lock and take my stuff. It's really that simple. Land that isn't being used is doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing. It's just sitting there being land. It doesn't matter if you personally think other use cases would be more beneficial. Just like it doesn't matter if you think my grandfather's antique desk should be in your house, rather than my storage unit. It's bad enough that we live under threat of imminent domain. You want that to extend to any @$$hole who thinks they deserve what someone else has.

Exactly. There are even videos out there showing people how to create fake lease agreements and such. It's insane.

Not just white settlers. Every color under the sun has taken land that wasn't theirs. It turns out that conquering others is an equal opportunity activity.

If the property owner hadn't been paying the taxes, the state would have already taken the property. This isn't about people being derelict in paying their taxes. The state is letting two parties pay the taxes and then granting ownership to the person who happens to sit on the land, rather than the person who paid for it. How about I start paying your mini storage bill (while you're paying it, as well) and rather than them telling you about it, they cut off your lock, give me a lock and key and declare that all your stuff is mine, now? Does that sound right to you?

If I'm paying my property taxes, I didn't abandon anything. If I wasn't paying said taxes, the government would have already taken the property. I bet you think it's okay to break into people's storage units and take their stuff, too, don't you? After all, they've just "abandoned" that property. Never mind that they are paying regularly to keep it. Never mind that if they really didn't want it, they would sell it or give it away. No, no, that doesn't matter. What matters is you found an excuse to take something that someone else paid for, that they don't happen to be guarding when you find it. You have a criminal mindset. You might want to look into that before it leads you down a bad path.

Not if someone moves in and shows a (fake) lease, claiming you agreed to let them live there. Nor if they showed proof that they lived there for thirty or more consecutive days. Ain't it grand?

I'm sorry but you're full of it. If the property owners weren't already paying their property taxes, the state would have foreclosed on it before the squatters got there. If I own something and I'm paying my taxes on it, you have no right to decide I don't want it - even if you also decide to pay my taxes. If I didn't want it, I would sell it or give it away. That's how it works. How is it that nimrods will claim that it's okay to steal a property because someone isn't "using" it? Meanwhile, if the property owner turned it into a reserve and then didn't "use" it, that would be a different story? The trees and animals on my dirt don't care how I classify my land but somehow, people do. Maybe I want to let the animals have it for thirty years until I'm ready to retire. Nah, that's not okay because, um...reasons. Your username suits you in ways you don't fully comprehend.

That's the thing. These largely aren't cases of people no longer paying their property taxes. Those properties do get seized by the state in most cases, and are auctioned off at tax auctions (I've been to quite a few of them). These are cases where people are paying their taxes, someone else starts paying them too, and instead of the state refusing the extra payments or notifying the property owner, the state allows this to go on long enough and then declares the trespasser to be the rightful owner. It's basically a long-term bribe to get the state to steal property and give it to you.

Not true at all. The government does not care where the money comes from. You could send in a check to pay my property tax right now and they wouldn't blink an eye. They'll just mark it paid and call it good. Don't delude yourself into thinking that the government is there to protect you.

I know I sleep better at night knowing that those who want to see more theft by both private and government entities don't get to just hit a button and completely nullify property rights. I can't even imagine how bad things would get if that were the case.

I'm guessing you're young. Okay, here's a thought exercise. If you rent a mini storage and put a bunch of stuff in there, is it yours? Do you deserve to have it, even though you don't choose to use it right now? If you're still paying your monthly rental (the way these people are still paying their property taxes and mortgages) does someone have the right to go and take your stuff out of your storage unit? I mean, if you didn't want that stuff, one would think you would sell it or give it away. So, why is it okay for someone to think you shouldn't have it, just because you're saving it to use later in your life? Are you not allowed to save things for later? How about money? If you decide to open a savings account and put money away for a few years, can I have it? If not, why? You weren't doing anything with it for a long time. By your logic, that means I should be able to just empty your and everyone else's savings accounts, right?

@gerberjoanne266 You have to take them to court and prove to a judge that it's not your signature that they put on the lease. Plus, just because you're not allowed to sublet, doesn't mean you didn't do so. That means they could get you evicted from your apartment for violating your lease, simply by claiming you sublet to them. It's your word against theirs and the law protects them.

Meanwhile, if you turn the same property into a nature preserve, the squatter would be charge with a crime for inhabiting a protected site. Somehow, it's okay to be completely hands-off with your own property one way but not the other. Strange. It's not like the deer and squirrels care whether you declare it a preserve but somehow, people do.
