Unafiliated voters aren't necessarily moderates. You said that California is about 30% Liberal and 30% Conservative, with moderates making up the other 40%. If someone always votes for Liberal candidates, they're a Liberal. California didn't become the Democrat super-majority it is because "moderates lean left." It became that way because a lot of left-leaning independent voters vote Democrat. Why? Because we have a two-party system in most places in the US. When you're a Liberal (or a Progressive) who isn't a Democrat, and you are only given a choice between a Democrat and a Republican, you're going to vote for the Democrat. California is a super-majority because the majority of California voters want Democrats to have unchecked power. There isn't a moderate on Earth who thinks one party should have complete control.

@trudeausemoer Obviously, poorly. The political extremism has gotten insane. People used to vote for the party they best aligned with but understood that opposition was necessary, for the sake of balance. Now, the majority are stupid enough to think they're always right. What's worse, they've been duped into believing the opposition is "the enemy." More than ever, we need to make third parties viable in this Country. Of course, any time someone says that, the useful idiots come out to scare people away from that idea with claims like "YoU'rE gOnNa SpLiT tHe VoTe!!! THeN tHe OtHeR sIdE WiLl WiN aNd ThEn We'Re AlL dOoMeD!!!!1!!11!!" It works, too. People have been programmed to be so afraid of the other side, that they'll continue to support a broken system.
