PG&E cut power in my town for several days, once. Gas powered cars and generators were how we got through it. Several of us lent and donated generators to people who couldn't afford them. We wouldn't have been able to do that with solar arrays and battery banks. We gave each other rides in cars we were filling with gas cans, rather than sitting around, waiting for EV batteries to charge. Electric isn't there yet and I have no intention of moving backwards, while waiting for it to catch up.

Don't forget, they also hand out free syringes to be left on the sidewalks.

@ReasonAboveEverything You need welding skills? Those are some fancy guns you're making. Look up "slam fire shotgun." No tools (unless you want to get into butt stocks and such). Widely available parts. 30 minutes of shopping, 5 minutes of building, 1 hour for the glue to dry (really well). Done and done. Pump out a few hundred in your garage while your neighbor is waiting for his 3D printer to arrive in the mail.

He'd have a heart attack if he knew how many people have done so...and legally.

"People are afraid to cheat." Yeah...no. Growing up, almost everyone in my neighborhood had utilities in their kids' names, due to outstanding bills in their own names getting things turned off. People stole cable...all the way up until they could just get someone's Netflix password to use. Those on the downs and the outs know they're gonna have to cheat sometimes. If someone came to my neighborhood and said "Hey, if you've ever owned a potted plant or fertilized your yard, you can get $50,000 as a farmer!"...they would have lied about having potted plants and fertilizing their yards to get that money.

@troyguffey I can make a slam-fire shotgun with a couple of pieces of pipe, a cap and a BB (though, I prefer to add a washer to more easily center the BB). I've personally put over 100 rounds through one that I made for about $8, and it was long before 3D printing was a thing. Oh, and it was perfectly legal to make and own. There is no valid argument against 3D printing guns. We've already been making guns ourselves for many, many years.

Good for you. I'm heading to the same region in a couple of years. Maybe I'll see you at the range! 😂

John Doe Have you ever met someone who escaped Cuba or Soviet Russia? Believe me, you'll never find someone who appreciates our Constitutional Republic more than one who has suffered under a dictatorship. The Californians who want to pay less to live in the same circumstances move to Oregon, Washington, and Austin Texas. The ones who want to be free of oppression are moving to places like Tennessee. Those other Californians think the South is just a bunch of Klansmen. They would never try to move there. Don't blindly hate people who want nothing more than to support and expand your way of life. Believe me, we all need more allies in this culture war.

Plus, y'know...bullets are metal. I don't really care if people are sneaking plastic guns past metal detectors, if they can't bring their bullets.

@prismarinestars7471 Neither are hardware stores, yet they have everything you need to make a gun.
2
And isn't it funny that he chose that talking point? After all, "the security of a free State" is the very reason that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
2
"Nobody should be able to make guns in their own basement." Ummm....Earth to Masshole: We've ALWAYS been able to make guns in our own basements. ALWAYS. I can go out to my garage and combine two pieces of pipe, a cap, a washer and a BB right now. Know what I'll have? A perfectly legal 12 gauge shotgun.
2
@libertarian4323 I can't lend a solar array and battery bank to a neighbor down the street. I lent out two generators. I'm sorry you wasted so many keystrokes responding to something I didn't say.
2
@gregkramer5588 As opposed to those of us who have inverters in our gasoline vehicles...that we don't have to use for appliances because we have gas generators? Yes, I suppose you could run a cord from your car to your house and reduce the range of your vehicle but why? There are much better options.
2
Havla Fitta I can make a shotgun out of two pieces of pipe from the hardware store. What are you talking about?
1
Why not? I know a bunch of people with slam-fire shotguns and none of them are bumping over quickie marts with them. They're fun to make and shoot. It's a cheap way to make a somewhat reliable boom-stick. 3D printed guns aren't even as reliable as zip-guns. If I want a terrible way to try to send a .22 downrange, I'll drill a hole in a 2x4, shove the bullet in it and smack it with a hammer. It would be about as accurate and slightly less likely to blow up in my face.

As soon as I hear that Pelosi agrees with something, I know it's probably a bad idea.
1
I have to say, I'd have a hard time leveling my shotgun at someone breaking into my house, if they pointed one of those at me. Have you ever tried to steady a long gun while laughing?
1
One counterpoint: We used paper straws before we used plastic. They worked fine. I'm not saying the government should come in and force businesses to use them but the idea that it's some kind of miserable experience using paper straws is false.
1
You don't even need tools. Just a couple of pieces of pipe, a pipe cap, a washer, a BB and some JB Weld.
1
I prefer to use a BB for the firing pin. You don't have to calibrate the depth, and over/under penetration of the primer is virtually impossible.

Actually, if you add up the Federally controlled lands and the privately owned land in California, the vast majority of those who own this State have no interest in leaving the US. The majority who do, are people who are renting someone else's property. They can leave whenever they want and it won't bother those of us who own this State, at all. I'm not really sure what's stopping them. If I wanted to leave, I'd have to give up my land. If they leave, they can take everything they own with them.
1
Of course they will. Most California Democrats are on government assistance. They aren't going to vote against the people who pay their rent and refill their EBT cards.
1
These are not "unintended consequences." The Dems look like heroes to their base, who doesn't understand basic math. Meanwhile, they've targeted the fast food industry so that when this fails, they can say "Well, it was too much too soon but Californians will be healthier for it!" All the while, they continue getting more people hooked on government assistance. Nobody votes Democrat harder than someone whose life depends on it. Again, not "unintended consequences." It's just called "the plan."

Yep

@TheRedmondEthan You aren't aware that we've been making zip guns and slam-fires in our own garages for...ever, are you? You don't know that it costs about $12 to have an effective 12 gauge shotgun that doesn't require any special skills or tools, do you? You are completely unaware that Federal law protects our ability to make our own firearms, aren't you? Anyone who is worried about these little, plastic pieces of junk is completely oblivious to the realities of the world they live in.
