  1. Rockets get fueled once and then launched. Commercial airliners are constantly refueled and flown out. Until they can meet the refueling times, batteries (of any weight) are a problem. Maybe celebrities will buy "green" planes but United, Delta, etc, aren't looking to reduce the number of flights they have in a given day, because they're waiting around for batteries to recharge.

  2. They're just getting themselves prepared for when the majority of collisions involve multi-vehicle thermal runaway, that the fire department can't suppress or even control. It just makes sense to fill their coffers now, to prepare for all the checks they'll have to write when major cities are on fire because of one careless driver.
