Because some people need things simplified to a ten scale. There are a lot of people who can't handle things like fractions or multiplying by twelve when converting feet to inches. We use the simplest method to cater to the simplest people.

A buddy of mine did this to his 454 Nova. He claimed it made a difference, though I'm sure not as much of one as this system. He also bypassed the internal vents completely, so no more cool rides on a hot day. Still, it was fun to watch the looks on people's faces when he popped the hood.

It also helps (when possible) to choose a smaller diameter rim and taller sidewall snow tire. You'll get more nose dive when braking but the extra sidewall flexes to allow a larger footprint when doing so. There's no replacement for a larger contact patch.

My Suburban cost me $2500 almost six years ago. I've put maybe $8000 worth of gas in it in that time. I've probably spent a couple grand on maintenance. I'm under $13,000 in five years and it hauls things like the Bobcat I rented to trench my backyard. It also takes me up the chopped up trail to my favorite fishing hole. I'm well within the EV "mostly sticks around town" demographic, yet I can't find a good reason to drop $30,000 on one. I could easily pick up a used Corolla for another couple grand if I wanted really good mileage. It would still take more than a decade to get to the cost of a new EV (and by then, there will be plenty of used ones on the market).

I had to drive in the snow in a '94 Trans Am GT with performance tires. THAT was an experience! 320 lb/ft of torque in a 3000 lb car, with no hope of "biting" the snow...but boy did she glide gracefully at a diagonal.
