  1. Optimist: I don't want to be a victim, so I want someone to take the guns away. Realist: I don't want to be a victim and nobody else is going to protect me. I guess I'd better get a gun and learn how to use it.

  2. Law enforcement officers are not there to protect you. They have no duty to protect you, so says SCOTUS. They are there to enforce laws and arrest people who break them. That's it. The police will dutifully investigate your murder but you'll be too dead to care. They will also stand outside of a school while children are being killed...and then investigate those deaths. Their guns are on their hips to protect themselves. If you want protection, you're going to need to handle that yourself.
