"This is not what I meant when I said I wanted a ten second car..."

Inherently apolitical? The only reason EVs other than Teslas exist is because of politics. These manufacturers never would have bothered otherwise. There weren't people boycotting ICE vehicles in any large numbers. It was government pressure (and subsidies) that created most of the industry.
49
Hey Roman, could you start telling us which country the electric motors in various EVs come from? It seems like it's really important to you to mention the country of origin of a gas engine, while I'd like to know who's building the motors "of the future."
19
And then I think about what I can get for $18,000 Used...
12
"It came out in 1963!" Chevy Suburban: How cute.

So...a little knob to keep newbies from getting confused by the reverse input? Whatever happened to just telling new drivers to put their hand on the bottom of the steering wheel when backing a trailer? It took an R&D department time and money creating this technology, instead of simply having a message pop up on the dash to tell the driver to move their hand down to the 6 o'clock position. Great use of resources there, Ford.

Actually, they look like the government is going to use less of my tax money to subsidize people with more money than me buying nice cars. The subsidies are ridiculous. Most EVs that have been sold in the US have been Teslas. Most Teslas have been $60k+. If you can afford a $60k+ secondary vehicle (relatively few people dove right in with one as their primary), you damn sure don't need my tax money going back in your pocket. Put my tax money toward improving and widening roads (which is what they're supposed to be doing with it, anyway). Smoother travel means better gas mileage for everyone. Better mileage means reduced emissions from everyone. But no, let's help buy another millionaire a $100,000 SUV instead, right?
7
So, you're saying that all of our "advancements" have put us right back to where we were 40 years ago?
6
What does that have to do with these 2021 Suburbans?
5
@soiceyboy33 Why do you need a garage? If you have a driveway, you're parking close enough to the house to plug in. I don't have a garage but I know exactly where on my house my charger is going, once I take the plunge and buy an EV.
5
Most people don't need to drive through forests and over large rocks, either. What's your point? There are tons of people who off-road in the deserts and beaches, all over the Western part of the US. Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, etc all have plenty of sand to drive on and no shortage of people who do so, frequently. Why wouldn't Jeep want to get in on that market?
5
Imagine paying extreme pricing for a pickup truck right now, just to help these companies subsidize their EV lines. No one who actually needs a truck wants to see them replaced with EVs, yet they're going out and paying the inflated prices for them, to help make it happen.
5
I never was much for the Cadillac variant of Suburban. Too much rapper bling for my taste. I'll take the original every time.
4
That's easy! You just deplete the battery on your way to the trail and then jump in someone else's gas powered Jeep or 4Runner to go wheelin'! 😂
3
No hatch in existence beats the barn doors.
3
"What do you get for the extra $50,000?" If the answer isn't "an entire second truck" it's not enough. Both are artificially inflated prices but really? A $50,000 difference and the work truck isn't even a true base model? Why the hell is anyone supporting this lunacy? People are lining up to be bent over dry - and then smiling and saying thank you. Remember when we all laughed at the $30,000 base price of the Gladiator? That was only four years ago! They've gone up almost $10,000 in four years! Why? There's no chip shortage any more. There are no supply chain issues. Manufacturers are just robbing people.
3
@ldmtag That's alright. After all, 'It's Cool to Hate.'
3
Or they could just make sure all of their body panels line up...
3
Why, how much do the other convertible pickups cost?
3
@crazyhass84 Why are you talking about Tesla's safety rating? OP is asking about the SUV in the video. Tesla's safety rating has nothing too do with whether this vehicle is safe. I would think that a self-proclaimed engineer in the automotive industry could tell the difference between a Tesla and a Rivian.
3
It's...not on the market.
2
@Ricky_R It's true. I am.

@1flash3571 Cool story. Why don't you offer to double what you pay to the IRS then? Did you know you can do that? You can offer up as much money as you want to the government. I'm sure they'll do exactly what you want them to do with it... People like you don't put your money where your mouth is, though. No, your type pays their bare minimum and then scoffs at someone like me for having the audacity to take a tax break on money I've donated to local charities. And for the record, your reading comprehension really sucks. At no pint did I say I have a problem with EVs or cleaner, better air. In fact, I suggested a practical way for the government to use that tax money to help with that very situation. I did say that I shouldn't have to subsidize the purchase of high dollar cars by people who can already afford them. If you have a problem with my not wanting to buy toys for rich people, well, I don't rightly care. You can be wrong all your life and it won't cost me one second of sleep. Have fun with that whole "being irrational" thing. You're well on your way to being a bona fide extremist!
2
@IbrahimNgeno Oh, did they finally eek past Tesla? I guess I was working with outdated info. It doesn't really change the fact that a whole lot of well off people got subsidized with tax dollars to buy cars they could easily afford without it. Thanks for the updated info. I'll have to take a look at the latest numbers before I pop off again.
2
@Itsjezz-ds9pe I've never hit my barn doors on a trailer.
2
@jaybeemhardscrote7466 It's actually funny how breakout you missed the point of my comment. Funnier still that you made a "You people" statement based on my stating a fact. Who is the group you're trying to lump me in with? Please, entertain me further with all your knowledge about me, that you gleaned from...one comment.
2
For the price of the AT4X, you could buy bith the base model 1/2 ton AND the mid-trim midsize. You'd probably even have money left over to go celebrate your purchases with a nice meal.
2
Here's hoping this means there's a plug-in hybrid version of the Maverick in the works.
2
They might as well pull the oversized start/stop starter, stuff a small electric motor in there, and give it dual purpose.
2
I'm 40 years old. My kids are getting old enough to move out, soon. I listen to The Offspring, as well as many other bands from many genres.
2
ap 123 Try it some time and tell me again how wrong I am. I've had to teach quite a few people how to back trailers up and it's by far the easiest way to teach anyone to do so.
2
You're 16. It doesn't matter what you get at this point. Buy an old truck, make all the mistakes that we all made at 16 and then worry about what's "best." A lot of it is going to come down to preference anyway and you don't know what you really prefer until you've got some experience.
1
TheMotonp2010 Plus, you can always upgrade it if you want more out of it down the road. It's all just nuts and bolts, after all.
1
@alromero5685 Yeah, changing towards retro, apparently. Dashboard shifter buttons are ancient. Like, before "three-on-the-tree" ancient. They're just recycling old ideas - not unlike the "modern" V-8s that shut down injectors for some cylinder to be more efficient. There were Cadillacs that back in the '70s. That being said, I liked both of those features and had a feeling they'd be back...but let's not pretend they're technological breakthroughs.

You couldn't pay me to take the dual clutch tranny. Not even by bribing me with a turbo.
1
@bumgamn6346 Yup.

Depends. Anyone with a solar array on their house can charge this every night, when they get home from work. Getting up the next day and running it around doing the usual things should be fine. The vast majority of people don't even drive two hundred miles in a day, so this would work out fine for most. Obviously, it won't suit everyone's needs but then, no vehicle does. It's a seven seater SUV that gets up to 400 miles on a charge and has all-wheel-drive. That's gonna tick a lot of boxes for a lot of people. Especially when you consider the tax bracket of the people who will be buying most of these.
1
What will your excuse be when more and more employers are installing chargers for their employees' vehicles, to get that good "Gone Green" PR? The fact is, the vast majority of people in the US drive far less than 200 miles/day. This car's range more than meets the basic needs of most people in that regard. Then there's the fact that its mere existence in the market helps to drive more competition to meet or beat this range at a lower price point. While this may not happen overnight, it will happen. More and more people will choose EVs for their commute. More and more businesses will install chargers for the convenience of their employees and their customers (and again, that good PR).

Same towing and lower payload specs than a Ford Maverick...which is a $22,000 ute.
1
White is stupid in any truck's interior. Winter sports aren't clean just because snow is white. The interior will look like crap in short order.

I love watching Roman try to pretend that the people who are lining up around the block for the Maverick are "truck people." It's not popular because it's a truck. It's popular because it's a gas efficient car with a bed. Truck people who aren't insane enough to pay the insane prices the market has created for new trucks, just buy used trucks. The Maverick came along at a time when truck manufacturers have convinced a lot of people that they don't need a truck. It's perfect for all of the people who need more than a car and less than a truck. Ram looks to be following suit. The manufacturers are loving this because they get to keep soaking stupid people (and people with an actual need) for WAY too much money by keeping real trucks at high prices. Then, they'll get to sell these Utes to people who refuse to spend that much to haul air 90% of the time, but want more utility than a sedan or SUV can offer. You can tell he really hates this. I don't blame him. It's going to keep the prices of real trucks high for the foreseeable future.
1
I'd be paying for Jeep branding? Here I thought I'd be paying for the only convertible, solid axle, dual locker truck with sway bar disconnect on the market. Do all those things to the other trucks and tell me how much you spent.
1
If these dealers aren't careful, people will start figuring out that airfare costs a lot less than these markups, and start traveling to other States to buy vehicles.
1
A nice sized "frunk," so you can tote a generator...just in case.
1
@bob15479 Yeah...PG&E is finally improving their grid. Not to advanced levels or anything. No, they're just trying to get it good enough to stop setting California on fire whenever there's wind. Because of their penalties and improvement costs, my electricity bill has doubled in a few, short years (after all, it's my fault they never reinvested their billions and billions of dollars into infrastructure). If every power company suddenly starts making huge investments into modernizing the grid, get ready for poverty to skyrocket. The tens of millions of people who are living paycheck to paycheck will suddenly stop being able to make ends meet. Then, the government will step in and subsidize the power companies' progress. How will they pay for it? By taxing the same people who can no longer afford their energy bills. "We can fix the grid!" is a shortsighted response that will only serve to make matters worse.
1
How long before we see roll cages and tops that encapsulate the entire cab and bed?
1
I mean...I have a bigger gas tank (31 gallons) and it takes me less than ten minutes to fill it. Maybe you should wait a few years before using the gas tank analogy when talking about battery capacities. As it stands, it's just a painful reminder of how slow EV charging still is.

Headroom: Infinite

Swing and a miss! Not even one locker?! Come on, Jeep. You know better.
1
@toledojeeper2932 Please. Even the Cherokee Trailhawk has a rear locker. There's no excuse for a high-end Wrangler or Gladiator not to have one. Not even "winch."
