100% legal. You don't have a legal right to have a bank account and the bank doesn't have to give a reason either. This does seem rather sinister though.

On behalf of muggers, thieves and pickpockets I thank you for considering us.

Its an excellent business opportunity for the one that does and think of the free publicity.

Im a retired Bank Manager and many years ago we had an unwritten rule, never open an account for a Nigerian. I'm sure you understand why !

@lynneroberts3628 Do you banks at Coutts ? However your bank is probably one of the others who won't give him an account.
2
It's Coutts, any the wiser ?
2
If he can't get an account he sure as hell won't be given a Banking licence !
2
Personal banking isn't very profitable, business and corporate is.

As a retired Bank Manager I can tell you its not, neither is refusing to open accounts for certain type of people or businesses. No one has a legal right to a bank account.
1
@charleswhite758 It's a commercial decision. There is no legal right to have a bank account.
1
@run2cat4run They aren't required to.

No one has a legal right to a bank account, it's that simple. The bank makes a commercial decision as its entitled to do.

For what ?
1
Banks closing customer accounts is nothing new, it's a commercial decision. No one has a legal right to a Bank account.
1
Good luck with getting a licence. You could just become a loan shark, no need to close anyones account, just break their legs.
1
@bw1376 The only reason more have refused is that he hasn't asked them. Its every bank, they all use use near identical procedures.
1
No one has a legal right to a bank account.

What about the DWP, no benefits, shame, never mind.
1
Whilst this does seem rather sinister, banks are highly regulated and certain types of people and businesses pose greater risks which are commercially not viable. The greatest risk is money laundering and any bank found to have aided this faces huge fines. HSBC were fined nearly £2 billion in the US !
1
Wrong, no one has a legal right to a bank account.
1
Banks closing accounts of customers the no longer want is nothing new. Also not opening them for certain types of people isn't new either.
1
Commercial decision. You may not agree with it and I agree its rather sinister, but they don't have to give a reason.
1
Probably Coutts, any the wiser ?
1
@michael42158 PEP status apparently came out of the EU.
1
No bank will give him an account including yours.
1
You are funny !
