Typical Mercedes these days unfortunately. The G series has always been pretty terribly built especially for one of the higher end models. Apparently most of them are assembled in Alabama which might explain it - not sure if that is true for the UK models though. I do dig the interior though, seems quite well thought out.

The "new" G series sucks just like the old one - in other news, water is wet and fire is hot.

@winstonchurchill9985 Well I'm an old b*stard, my first car was a Triumph, and that thing was thrown together like a pile of garbage - haven't owned any Japanese, German or American vehicle as poorly built as what British Leyland were pooping out during the late 70's. Still loved that car though. IMO vehicle manufacturing hit a peak in the early 2000's - then came the GFC in 2007 and things really turned then - I think that's when most of the major manufacturers bought hard into that planned obsolescence model - and you are right part of this is driven by consumers always wanting the newest, shiniest thing/latest tech etc.

@winstonchurchill9985 Thanks for the info - agree US manufacturing isn't great anymore, and neither is German - could be worse though, could be a Chinese Volvo 😀

@ Thats true, there are some amazingly good, affordable cars coming out of China now - but Geely are not one of the good manufacturers, they cut too many corners - and they own Volvo now.

@ Sure, I'd take Alabama over Albania any day... but realistically I'll stick with Chūbu.

@Ryan2022 I guess the engineering is just bad then.

@Ryan2022 I think they were generally pretty solid in the 80's and 90's, at least comparatively speaking, as cars in general were often a bit crap in the 80's and 90's - mate of mine has an 80's SL350 convertible that he's owned for 30 years now, and I think the only repeated issue he's had with it is the soft top leaking. My sister had a 190E - think it was around 1990 vintage - the main problem she had with that was the stupid hydraulic central locking which was always failing. Otherwise again, it was pretty trouble free. That is just anecdotal though so you may be right. Of course they have always been expensive to maintain and repair when things do go worng, which is possibly where a lot of the complaints about them come from. Modern ones though, they seem to be all generally pretty junk - I keep a close eye on the JD Power reliability surveys, and Mercedes is always a bottom feeder.

A lot of them are made in Alabama apparently - not sure if that's true for the UK models though.
