Ergo, it was HIS enormous sense of entitlement (and the encouragement of Louis Mountbatten, his 'honorary grandfather', and his 'mentor'' Laurens van der Post) which fomented this situation which broke up two families, involving 4 children which led to behavioural difficulties for at least 2 of them, led ultimately to Diana's premature death (and 2 others and life changing injuries for another), and ensured that Camilla had to endure many years of being pilloried and her good name trashed. Imagine if Camilla had been able to say no....she and her husband and family would have been very quietly, with icy politeness and without any public acrimony, shunned by those in the circles in which they all moved. They may have had to live abroad even. Their children would also have been persona non grata and without the careers they have now. All down to Charles - who always gets what Charles wants.

Well, no, not really! Hard to feel anything positive for those who are rude and contemptuous of others who are willing and able to help them. Now, if this had been a comedy show, it might have been a different matter!

Goodness! I have never, ever heard of these half-siblings. Yet I've always been an avid history student. I've only ever heard about the mother whom Victoria very unreasonably hated until the lady died. And the scheming Sir John Conroy. This means that Victoria likely had a big clutch of nieces and nephews too. What happened to them?

She's remembered with much affection by many all over the world. Her death was a tragedy. But really, we've continued with our lives and watched new lives unfold...Diana will never, ever be forgotten, just as Edward I's chere reine, Boudicca, Flora MacDonald, Joan of Arc, Harriet Tubman, QEI, QVictoria, the superlative and incomparable QEII and a huge number of other outstanding women throughout history will always be remembered. I wouldn't say that Diana is the people's queen nowadays though.

@patriciawenzel3871 In fact, the titles became extinct with the death of the 4th Earl in 1891 who died without a male heir. Nothing to do with the end of the British Empire and all to do with sex discrimination. The estate was passed down through the female line.

Yes, I thought that. Especially the censorious, beechy male journalists. I really liked Diana, and now I also like Camilla who's doing a great job in her own way. Not for us to judge the rights and wrongs.

@Grace Well, yes. Though as much as I deplore their morals, Diana did wreck the Carlings' marriage and lured others' husbands away from their wives. She also messed up Hewitt good and proper.... The sum of all their wrongs don't make right. BTW, if you listen to the actual recording, Charles did not say he wanted to be a tampon, he actually shudders and says he wouldn't want to come back as such. That stupid private tape has been so misquoted over the years.

I seem to remember the young PW telling his mum that he'd restore the HRH to her when he's king. But, really, what is it with the RF and their extreme pernickertiness about titles and all!? Get given one and it's like being patted on the head for being a good girl, have them 'stripped' and it's like being sent to the headmaster's study for 20 lashes... King+Queen is enough! That's my Sunday morning rant on the "elaborate uselessness of it all".

@korenakay1049 I rather think KC is too old for all that playing away from home stuff! Plus he's far too busy. I'm a 10 commandments kind of girl. If you're lusting for another woman in the church even as your bride is walking up the aisle you need to call off the wedding pronto before any more damage is done! But what's done is done and I don't wish them any karma. PW will do whatever he sees fit. I don't really care about it as he won't be allowed to exact any sort of revenge apart from forgetting to invite her to a few RF knees-ups. She'll be too old to care by that time too!

@johnkad123 I agree with you to the point where you invoke 'needy', which is invariably used as a pejorative. Diana was a neglected child ripped from her mother's arms by her domestic abuser father. Then, for her A1 brood mare potential, she was finagled, gaslighted into a marriage with an older man who, with an excess of archaic entitlement, had every intention of keeping mistresses. There's not a young woman alive who wouldn't show signs of distress and injury at all that.

@johnkad123 No, indeed, contemporaneous correspondence, evidences that it was Dickie Mountbatten and van der Post, both prolific adulterers, who encouraged the Prince to hold those archaic views. It seems that you're quite poorly informed or have chosen to take a negative position towards Diana. Of course you can believe whatever you like, but I don't want to be drawn further into your specious argumentation.

@johnkad123 I agree that the cult of Diana has indeed become a disturbing public obsession. Her story has been whittled and shaped by the public into one of those darker, tragic, heart-rending Grimm-like fairy tales. As with all fairy tales, whether they celebrate the good or caution against the bad, many people find features in their interpretations of Diana's lifestory to identify with very personally. So the tale is stretched by each person to encompass, replay and explain their own griefs, fears and angers without them ever having to really confront their own shortcomings and salve their own wounds. A psychologist might call that a type of projection - inserting their disowned difficulties and perspectives into another's life. Projection is never a healthy long term strategy. It is indeed the basis of obsession.

@ElwynnForest I'm wondering why you chose to 'correct' me and not the poster (@KorenaKay ) to whom I was responding? It was that poster who used the word karma to describe what she wished on the King and Queen. And you're wrong about 'karma' meaning 'action'. It's a far more complex concept and sacred tenet than simply 'action'. The Buddhist saint Paramhansha Yogananda described karma as a "law of justice" that determines who we are. Yogananda stated that we cannot escape our own basic patterns, but we do have the choice to follow our basic nature or work against it. Therefore, it is not the outward appearance of our actions that determine what effects they will have in the future, but the intentions behind them. Buddhists believe that we must accept the consequences of our actions and learn from them on our path to enlightenment. [Shiva, Buddhists d 0 t 0 r g] I used the word in the commonly used non-buddhist sense that @KorenaKay had used in order to facilitate communication. That is, I didn't feel a need to correct her.

@elizabethshaw734 The Scottish government had a repatriation scheme. Maybe it's still going? My Aussie friend (Scottish parents) told me about it a few years back. The gvt offered a great deal of help for people of Scottish heritage (as I am also) to return and resettle - a generous package of e.g. housing and financial help plus other needs. (Knowing about this is why I wanted to understand something of your circumstances). Scotland is a great country with lots to offer and far, far fewer social problems than England, which I wouldn't recommend nowadays for anyone unless they're £billionnaires! In my humble experience of having lived in several countries, moving countries is never an easy project at the best of times. But so worth it!

Bench Mark She had just turned 20. She was a naive girl. I understand that she DID try and get out of it. She discussed it with her big sisters who told her she couldn't get out of it. I also heard that she met with the Archbishop a short while before, he also persuaded her to carry on with the wedding. They were all ranged against her - the whole of the British establishment. Edit - @Bench Mark I tend to agree with you about feudalism. Which is still at the core of British life and all its institutions. @John Wyatt Many people also adopt revenge agendas after relationships that they chose blindly, ignorantly. Her son is another one of them.

@Littleonesmicrosanctuary In fact, Wikipedia has the same information as Debretts, Burkes and The Peerage. On his death in Nov. 1891, William Henry Hare Hedges-White, 4th Earl of Bantry the Earldom of Bantry and his other titles became extinct. It's interesting to note that an honourable number of their ancestors are ordinary Irish people.
